"Luke, our guest is here." My mother said knocking on my door and openings it a crack.
~
We all got up and headed downstairs. Usually the guests my parent would invite over we're old people and all they did was just sit there and observe. I've learned to just ignore them.
~
"Is this going to be awkward Luke?" Calum asked quietly making sure his voice didn't echo through my spacious house.
~
"No, just be yourself- yeah just be yourself Calum my parents will like you." I said thinking about Calum's ADHD self and how he says things without even thinking twice about it.
~
"Yas bitch yas." He whispered.
~
We all walked into the dining area to see a young girl about my age, and her parents sitting at the table already. This may be just a little awkward.
~
"Hello, you must be our guests." I said as they all stood up to greet us.
~
"These are my friends Ashton and Calum, they will also be joining us at supper." I smiled.
~
"Nice to meet you Luke, I'm Mr. Calvic and this is my wife Mrs. Calvic and my daughter, daughter Calvic." He laughed.
~
"Dad." The girl protested, her cheeks flushing red.
~
"This is my daughter Sarah. I trust that all three of you will be great friends?" He asked putting his hand out.
~
"Yes sir." I said shaking his hand firmly.
~
"That's a strong handshake my boy, I like that in young men like yourself." He smiled and proceeded to shake Ashton and Calum's hand as well.
~
We all took a seat. Things were silent for a while until my mother and father took their seats.
~
"So is everyone getting along?" My father smiled.
~
"Ah yes, indeed we all are." Mr. Calvic smiled.
~
"Sir Calvic, I propose we can talk business while our children and wives dine in another room." My father said grabbing the attention of my mother.
~
My mother loved sitting together as a whole family at dinner. I could see the annoyance in her eyes. Well, he's most likely getting the couch tonight.
~
We all got up my mother and Mrs. Calvic walked into the kitchen. My mother eager to show her how many burners on our stove we had.
~
The four of us walked into the living room and took a seat on the couch.
~
"So," Sarah said breaking the short silence that was cast upon us.
~
"How do you all know each other?" She asked smiling.
~
"Um," I hesitated knowing that if I said school she may be taken by surprise.
~
"School." Calum blankly said not thinking that 'school' was basically a foreign world to people who were associated with my father.
~
"Oh that's interesting, you aren't home schooled?" She asked.
~
"No we go to a public school." I said wondering how she would react to the word public.
~
"Oh, what's that like?" Questions kept spewing from her like a fountain but Ashton and Calum didn't seem to mind. For the next thirty minutes they'd answer to what seemed to be the most simplest questions.
~
"It sucks much ass." Calum said. I could tell he was trying to screw with her. He wanted to take advantage of how uptight and proper she was. She was nice, but for a girl like her she almost never heard all the profanity that was Calum Hoods vocabulary.
~
"Then why must you go?" She continued to ask her questions.
~
"It's required for us to receive an education, plus it doesn't always suck it can be fun sometimes." Ashton finally spoke up.
~
"Bullshit!" Calum shouted out making the four of us laugh.
~
"You are funny, I wish there was more people like you three." She said smiling, winking over at me.
~
"In public school there's all kinds of funny people, but the real funny people are the people who shop at Walmart after 5pm." Calum said knowing that would confuse the girl who looked like she had never set a foot in a public shopping area.
~
"What?" She said furrowing her eyebrows.
~
"Dare I show her people of Walmart Ash?" Calum smirked.
~
At this point even I was confused.
~
"People of Walmart?" I asked looking over at her letting her know that she wasn't alone in her confusion.
~
"Oh my poor Lucas!" Calum cried out.
~
"I thought you knew better," he said shaking his head.
~
"Cal I don't think they can handle such a thing." Ashton giggled.
~
Calum pulled out his phone and proceeded to type in www.peopleofwalmart.com
And there on his screen there appeared a women- or what seemed to look like three women clumped into one wearing fishnets.
~
"EW!" She screamed while I looked away in pure horror.
~
Calum and Ashton both laughed as my parents ran into the room to see what had happened.
~
"What's going on in here?" My father shouted.
~
I just rolled my eyes.
"Nothing father, Calum just told us a story about the time he feel off of his bicycle right Calum?" I said looking over at him.
~
"Yea the injury was major I had to get twelve stitches." He said with out hesitation.
~
"Boys will be boys." Sarah's mother said trying to break the tension in my fathers eyes.
~
"I think it's best that you boys will be going now, we've enjoyed your company and you are welcome anytime." My mother smiled and showed them to the door.
~
"Now why don't you and Sarah get to know each other a little better." My mother said winking at me and nudging my shoulder.
~
"Uh," I looked over at Sarah she was blushing for some reason.
~
"Why don't you show Sarah the balcony," my mother suggested.
~
I didn't want to take her to the balcony, that was my favorite place in this whole entire house. I would go there and spend time out there with Jane. She had always gone out to the balcony when she felt sad.
~
She'd always tell me to look out into the distance. And look up at the stars. How she always wanted to go to outer space and escape it all.
~
I do believe that she's there now. I haven't set one foot on that balcony since the day my parents came to me in tears telling me the news about her. She took her own life. I couldn't step foot out there. It was hard for me to look up at the stars for a while, but since then every night I made myself look up and blow them a kiss good night hoping that Jane would be up there shining down on me.
~
I looked at Sarah trying to fight the urge to break down in tears.
~
"I have a better place we can go actually." I said holding out my arm for her to grab so I could escort her up the stairs and into my room.
~
"You're taking me to your bedroom?" She asked her face flushing red.
~
"Well I have a small balcony connected to it, it's comfortable out there. The view isn't all the great but it's still peaceful." I said opening the balcony doors.
~
This balcony meant nothing to me. I actually felt frightened when stepping out onto it because it was literally held up with two skinny metal bars.
~
"You're right it is nice." She said glancing out into the open field that was my backyard.
~
"I don't really come out here much only on certain occasions and for certain people I guess." I said trying to make conversation.
~
"Would you say you only take people out here who are special to you?" She asked smiling and placing a hand on my shoulder.
~
I glanced down at her hand, hoping that this was just a friendly thing she was doing.
~
"Yeah I guess, I dunno." I casually said leaning against the railing.
~
"I think that's nice." She said looking down at my hands resting on the bar.
~
She leaned up against the railing right next to me, placing her hand on mine.
~
"I think you're nice Luke." She said leaning in close to me.
~
"Oh uh thanks, but I should probably tell you-"
~
She cut me off in a kiss. Her lips were soft and felt good against mine. I resisted the urge to kiss her back, though I really didn't want to kiss her back I just enjoy kissing it made me feel important for some reason. I lightly pushed her away and looked down to the ground in embarrassment.
~
"Sarah I-" I hesitated avoiding her eyes.
~
She tilted my chin up so I was looking directly into her eyes.
~
"What is it Luke? Did I do something wrong?"
~
"No, it's just that, I'm in love." I said seeing the expression on he face turn into pure terror.
~
"With a boy." I said as she sighed in relief.
~
She smiled in acceptance but her words, not meant to offend, but simply spoken out of pure concern and care felt like a slap to the face.
~
"I'm so sorry!" She said grabbing me in an uncomfortable hug.
~
"But you're air to the thrown, people are so rude and unaccepting, do your parents know?" She asked as we sat down at the side table next to us.
~
"No- I've never told anyone." I said fighting back my tears.
~
"I've honestly never felt so afraid in my life of my own parents. My dad is literally the reason why same sex couples can't get married." I said crying into her shoulder as she walked over and put her arm around me.
~
"Don't worry Luke, we'll figure this out, I'm here for you." She said.
~
"Thank you so much." I said grabbing her in a hug.
