When the tornado hit the lighthouse, I was bent over with my hands wrapped around my knees and my head buried between them, sobbing. This is the ideal position to be in when a tornado is nearby, which is good that it's what I was doing when the tornado came.
I heard it as it tore through the wall over by where Bailey was, and I heard the beginning of her scream but not the end of it. I felt something hit me, and it took me a minute to realize that it was arms wrapping around me protectively.
It seemed that just as quickly as it had come, tearing into the lighthouse, it had left, and the sound of it faded. I felt the arms around me let go, and slowly I uncurled myself.
The room was wrecked, the whole wall that Bailey had been sitting against no longer in its original place. A small part of it had fallen in, the rest of it probably swept away by the tornado.
"I-Is it gone?" I heard Rebecca ask, and I looked over to find her and Davy hugging each other tightly.
"Y-Ya, I think so," I muttered, looking around. I didn't see Grandpa or Bailey. "Where are...?"
"Bailey got blown out," Rebecca told me. "I don't know about your grandpa though."
"Oh no," I whispered. "No no no no." I ran over to the part of the wall that had been torn out, looking outside. Everything was dark and I could feel rain splattering on the sweatshirt Caleb had given me.
"NO!" I screamed into the sky. I started running outside, wanting nothing but to get out of this mess. "NO NO NO NO!"
"ELLIE!" I heard three people scream somewhere behind me. I didn't care. I kept running.
"ELLIE! ELLIE! COME BACK!"
"NO!" I wailed, continuing running. I could feel my legs weakening with each step, the storm pushing against me.
Then I felt myself falling to the ground, no, I was being tackled to the ground. "Gotcha," someone said. The person started pulling me up, then scooped me into their arms bridal style.
"No no no no," I whispered. "No."
"It'll be okay," the voice told me.
"Stop lying," I whispered back, suddenly feeling drowsy.
"Shhh."
I let go, just like I had in the light room, falling into sleep.
