Chapter 16: The Waitress
Enzo and I switched places so he can observe them more closely. They don’t look dangerous; in fact they were actually having a nice little chat with an old lady, maybe around 35 years old. She had her haircut up to her shoulders giving her that powerpuff girl buttercup look. She wore an elegant coat with fur for the collar and a diamond watch. Enzo couldn’t see the face for she was facing away from her. All three were laughing and doesn’t seem like they were here for trouble.
“Let’s just order and go.” I whispered to Enzo. I acted casually, looking at my nails, checking the time and smiling formally. A sense of relief came into me when Enzo described them as harmless for now.
“Indeed, let’s make it a quick one, so let’s just have five steak and sodas to go.” Enzo raised his hands and called the waitress. She was young, about 18 years old with red dyed hair and hipster glasses on, she looks pretty with all her make up on. Enzo ordered quickly, he explained that they were in a hurry because we have a talent show to attend to, which was a bad idea since the waitress stayed for a little chat about our talents. He wasn’t prepared for a lie this far so I had to make up for him.
“We do magic tricks, basic magic tricks not like those professionals up on stage who cuts their assistants on half.” I hesitated. I never had a lot of talent; if you include kicking alien butts a trick then I suppose I am talented.
“Can you show me one? Please, I never saw a magician on action before, except for those in TV and stuff.” The waitress said. She stood there for a minute waiting for our reply. Obviously the waitress didn’t know the meaning of in a hurry. I guess it wouldn’t hurt to show her a magic trick, although I do not know what to perform in front of her. I quickly took a coin and just started going with the flow.
I handed the waitress the coin, “Here sign this coin for me please.” the waitress signed the coin with the marker she had on her apron pocket; her signature was eligible. Enzo looked at me, he’s giving me that ‘what are you up to?’ look. He did not expect that I would go this far, but if the waitress asked for more. I would have to stop her; we really were in a hurry.
I took the coin and blow on it; I said a little magic word which I clearly made up. The waitress was still looking excited even though I do not know what I am doing. I returned the coin inside my pocket once again dramatically.
I held my fist in front of her and asked her to choose, “Right or Left? Where do you think the coin is?” I focused on the coin, levitating it out of my pocket and below the table, it was hard to concentrate when you’re talking to your audience and levitating a coin but I managed to do both task at once, not even a single headache was felt.
“That one.” she chose pointing the right one. I opened my fist to reveal nothing. The girl was still faithfully excited because she knew there was more. I quickly controlled the coin and placed it in her right pocket; she didn’t seem to notice it at all, she was still focused on me.
“Where is the coin then? Still in your pocket?” she asked me. It was a nice question, I smiled and checked my pocket, it was empty of course, the waitress looked amazed, and applauded. Enzo doesn’t look impressed, he was scratching his head; probably bored.
“Well it is in a pocket, maybe your right pocket has it?” I asked in a confused manner. The waitress quickly checked her pocket. Her eyes widened when she felt the coin in her pocket. She was more amazed when she saw her signature in front of the coin. She applauded once again with her big smile on her face. I was happy that I made someone’s day. I almost forgot about Agent Cooper and Roth.
“That was amazing, how did you do that?” she asked; an obvious question asked by every magicians audience.
“Well a magician never tells her secrets.” I shrugged, I was a little boastful but also proud. I could definitely do this for a living if I wasn’t chased by those evil men with tattoos. I could almost see my future right now.
