Shaking, he stood outside his father's study with his hand on the knob. Earlier he received a hand-written note from his father requesting his presence in the study. He never received any notes from his father before. Granted, a two-minute conversation with the said man was just as rare. In fact, any form of conversation with any of his family other than the dog was rare. It probably explained why he had such a large friend group at school. It was his way of covering the hole of emptiness in his heart caused by his family.
"You're late," his father said right as he opened the door. It was strange he knew the door opened seeing as he was turned away with his back facing his son.
"My apologies father, I came here as fast as I could after receiving the note."
His father made an uncommitted sound as he turned around to face the boy. "That doesn't matter at this moment. What matters is that your mother thinks you're ready."
The young boy opened his mouth to ask what he was referring to before being cut off by his father.
"You surely remember what we've been teaching you, right?" his father asked. He waited for a nod from the younger before continuing. "Well, your mother believes that it would be a good idea to get you to join the cause."
The boy had a small inkling of what his father was talking about. Starting from a young age, the boy was taught to hate a certain intelligent species. Well, not just one certain intelligent species, all of them except for humans. The boy was taught to hate any and all magical species. It also wasn't a well kept secret that his parents were the leaders of an Anti-Magical beings movement called TAME. The boy wasn't sure what it stood for but he knew their slogan. It was "making the world a safer place".
"So..." the boy hesitated, "you're asking me to join TAME?"
"Of course I am," The father stated with an odd glint in his eyes. "Don't you want to make the world a safer place? Don't you want to take revenge on those who wronged us in the past? Don't you remember how all of those born with more privileges than others treated us? Don't you remember how they took everything we cared about and then had the audacity to put the blame on us? You may not remember this but your grandma was kidnapped by them. You don't know how it felt to be there when we finally found her. She was covered in blood... head to toe. There were deep scratches and cuts all over her body. Do you know where we found her? We found her in the basement of one of the high-class magic people. If one of their 'almost royalties' did such a thing, who's to say others won't do it too?" His father looked fierce, borderline sad and angry. However, the second he glanced at his son his features softened. "If there was one thing I wished I could changed was the fact that I never got to be a part of you growing up. I was always so busy trying to advocate for our cause I forgot I had a son. If you accept to join the cause, you'll be able to spend more time with us, your family."
"Is my older brother a part of this?"
"He was recruited a long time ago. Would you accept?"
"Do I have a choice?"
His father glanced at him apprehensively. "If you truly want one."
Granted, it wasn't' the answer he was hoping for but the prospect of spending more time with his family seemed too good to give up.
"I'm in."
