I didn't know my first year at camp would end in a new friendship that just do happned to turn romantic by the end of summer..

I sat in the car, waiting to arrive at Camp Highland, in Maryland. My veins pulsing, as I slowly felt a liquid floating towards my throat.

"You okay Phoenix?" my cousin asked. "Yeah Jade, I'm fine." I said. My voice cracked. "Are you sure? Your voice only cracks when your lying." Jade asked, a streak of concern in her voice. Jade was my older cousin, who was coming to camp with me, while my parents traveled back to Philadelphia.

I stared out the window, watching the landscape flash by. I looked down at my necklace, it was from my first boyfriend, Parker. And it was one of the only things that I kept after I broke up with him last winter. "Jade, I'm not sure I want to go to camp." "It will be fine Phoenix. You'll blend in with everyone else, and have a good summer," she said. But I could tell, this would be an adventure.

I drifted off to sleep. And before I knew it, I heard Jade said "Hey Phoenix. We're here." I stirred. "Why couldn't we've driven from L.A?" I whined. "Because. We don't live in L.A. We live in Philadelphia." Jade stated, pulling the car into the parking lot.

Once we parked, I slowly opened the car door, and fell out. "Hey, you okay?" I heard someone ask. It was a boy. He had walked over to me to help me up. "Yeah. I'm fine." I said grabbing his hand. He yanked me upwards, almost causing me to fall directly on top of him. "Thanks, umm...." "Hunter." the boy interrupted. "I'm Phoenix." I responded shaking his hand.

I looked around. Everyone at camp was staring at us. As I looked at my fellow campers, I saw a familiar face, Parker. "Hey Smith!" I heard Parker yell from a group of boys. He slowly, but surely, walked over to me. I felt embarrassment wash over my face. This was the opposite of what I wanted to have happen this summer.

"Hey Parker." I whined. I felt the eyes of every camper on me and Parker, waiting for either of us to make a move."So, who's this?" Parker asked pointing at Hunter. I didn't know what to say. I'd only just met Hunter, and I was sure he wouldn't want to be friends with me after what had happened.

When I opened my mouth to speak, I heard Hunter say "We're friends, just friends." "Well, have fun with your new 'friend', Smith." Parker said walking back towards the group of boys, from which he came. The crowd dispersed, as Jade stepped out of the car, her mouth wide open.

"What on earth just happened?" she yelled. "It's fine Jade. I handled it, kind of." I stuttered. "Kind of?" Jade asked. "I helped." Hunter interrupted. "Oh. I'm Jade, Phoenix's older cousin." Jade said. Jade probably wasn't happy that a boy had helped me. Especially since this was similar to how I'd met Parker. "Thanks Hunter. I'll see you later." I said shaking his hand again. But truthfully, I really wished I wouldn't have to deal with him, or Parker again.
