.In a Trap.

~Queenie~

"You're going out with Steff!?" Andie burst after I had explained to her my unusual visit at Trax, the place she worked.

I winced when she said it so loud. I was sitting on the counter, one leg crossed over the other. When she said the words, the entire shop shushed and looked in our direction.

"I don't want the whole world to know," I whispered harshly to her.

"Sorry," she apologized. "But don't you realize what a jerk he his?"

I nodded. I had heard that statement over a thousand times already. "I know. I told the same thing to Duckie. I'm giving him one chance, and if he screws it up, I'm dropping him."

Andie cocked her head to the side. "Speaking of Duckie, why aren't you going on a date with him instead?"

"You know good and well he doesn't like me," I reminded her. "I've waited for so many years. I'm done waiting. I probably won't go very far with Steff, but it will help me get back in the grove of wanting to date."

Andie nodded in understanding. "Makes sense. Just ... please don't let him take advantage of you."

"I already promised Duckie. He's coming, you know."

Andie's eyes widened.

"He's going to sneak in, making sure I don't get into any trouble."

Her surprised look turned to a smile. "That's good. He wouldn't dare let Steff lay a finger on you."

I grinned. It was true. Even though Duckie didn't love me like I loved him, I was still his best friend and he cared for me. There was the ring of the door and I knew who it was. I checked my watch. Seven on the dot. He was good. I turned and there he was, Steff McKee. He may have been a jerk, but that didn't stop him from being devilishly handsome and making me blush when he smiled. He waved his hellos to Andie and held out his arm.

"You ready?" he asked.

I doubted I ever would be, but I nodded. "Yep."

" Do you want a drink?" Steff shouted over the loud music.

I peered at him. The party so far had been terrible. There were couples making out in the corner, and in bedrooms. Even the bathroom was used as a makeout space, which was really gross. However, something about being with Steff really made the party ... fun. I was starting to think that maybe I had miss judged him.

"Don't worry. There's some punch that's alcohol free. I made sure it was in the fridge so it didn't get spiked."

I sent Steff an appreciative smile and nodded. He wandered off to find a drink for me and most likely for him.

I turned to gaze around the room. So far, I hadn't seen Duckie here yet, but I was sure he was around here somewhere, hiding among the shadows like he promised. I was guessing I didn't need him anymore, but it was still good to know I had back up if I did. Steff came back and gave me my drink. I took it happily and took a couple sips. My date held out his hand and I looked at it curiously.

"Do you want to dance?" he asked.

I nodded and put my drink down so I could go with him.

"How are you feeling?"
