I used to fall asleep
feeling the weight of my mother's hand
resting on my head.
Her crooked fingers brushing
backwards with a tenderness
I never experienced again.
I always thought of those nights
when you played with my hair
while my head was placed in your lap
as I attempted to block out the sun.
