My mother dragged me into the shop by my wrist. She spoke with an almost high class accent, being from a wealthy background she was well educated. "Come on, Sarah, I really don't have time for your antics today" she says, pulling me up to the counter. I look at the rows of chocolate and sweets at my eye level, my hand reaches out to touch but my mother sees and slaps it away. "Twenty of your finest please" she says to the shopkeeper.
We may have lived on a shitty council estate in the middle of southend with hardly any money between us, but somehow she always managed to afford expensive cigarettes. We only lived in a council house because thats all she could afford after she and dad divorced. She pays the man and pulls me back out of the shop.
Then she reaches into her bag and finds her ring cigarette holder thing and places one into it. Then lights it and takes a long drag, so long I was afraid she may pass out from lack of air in her lungs.
"Look at what you do to me, Sarah-Lynn, you stress me out so much that you've driven me to smoking" she exclaims. That wasnt true. Her words still hurt though.
"Come on we're gonna miss our train" she says and we begin walking towards the station. We were both dressed on all black, headed to my aunt's funeral. I had never met her before so I wondered why we were going, mum said my dad wanted me there as it was his sister.

"Will there be anybody my age there?" I ask.

"Yes, but you mustn't speak to them".

"Why not?".

"Because, Sarah, it is a funeral. Not a fucking Playdate for you to run around at" she hisses back "besides you won't know anyone there apart from your father and you uncle David".

I smile "I like uncle David. He always brings me sweets".

"You mustn't eat them, they'll make you very ill and fat. You give them to me" she replies. I just looked into the distance sadly, not knowing what to reply.
------

The air over the funeral was thick and gloomy. My mother had wandered off to go and socialise with others, leaving me to sit alone and watch evertone from on the cemetary wall, it wasnt that tall, maybe about two feet high. So I could sit comfortably. A man came up to me and leant down to my level. I knew who he was straight away because of his bleached blonde quiff and different coloured eyes, one green one blue.
"Uncle David" I smile and hug him.

"Hello, Sunny" he replies, hugging me back "and how is life keeping you".

"The same" I sigh.

"I know what'll cheer you right up" he reaches into his suit jacket and pulls out a strawberry flavour lollipop, I imagine the sweet taste on my tongue.

"Thank you, but mummy says I'm not to eat sweets" I reply.

"Why ever not?".

"She says they'll make me very ill and fat".

"Oh dont be silly. Here, just dont let your mummy see you" he replies.
Two girls who looked the same, long brown hair and blue eyes came wandering over. They wore the same black dress and shoes, they looked alot like an even more twisted version of the twins from The Shining.
One of them was leading the other toward us by her hand, as the other seemed more shy and didnt really want to socialise.
"Ah, girls, please join us. I got some for you too" he pulls out two more lollies and gives them to the girls.

"Hello and who might you be?" The more confident of the twins asks me.

"Sarah" I reply "and you?".

"Violet and this is my twin sister Lyla" she replies "she doesnt talk much. How old are you?".

"Seven".
