I grabbed onto Avi’s wrist as we started into the building where everyone competing was meeting with the TV show’s crew. I didn’t do well in good crowds, especially ones where I was expected to talk. I felt bad hanging onto Avi like this, especially since we barely knew each other. I was probably making him uncomfortable, but instead of him kind of shrugging me off like I expected, he put his hand over mine.

“Don’t sweat it.” He said. “I’m nervous too.”

I smiled at him out of thanks and followed the rest of the group into the building. The other three were all hyped up to meet new people; it’s something I’ve always envied about Scott and Kirstie. They were super social and always thrived at parties when they were surrounded by new people. I always shied away for that reason in particular.

“I wish there was alcohol at least…” I whispered more to myself than anyone and Avi shook his head.

“You’re 18.” He scolded and I rolled my eyes.

“Yeah, like you didn’t drink when you were underage.”

He narrowed his eyes at me and smiled. He was so nice. And he was shy like me. That definitely helped me feel more comfortable around him.

Inside there were people swarmed everywhere. We stayed in our little intimate group and I finally let go of Avi’s arm once we all started talking. One of the groups started singing from afar and all of us started smiling. They sounded amazing. It was a group full of guys – and there were at least twenty of them from what I could tell. Other groups were cheering them on and I smiled to myself. Maybe everyone would be supportive and no one would pick on me here like choir in high school. One could only hope, right?

Another group stood to the side of us. One kid was beatboxing and the other members were either dancing or talking to one another. One of the girls looked over to our group and I made sure not to be seen staring, but then she looked over at Scott and her mouth opened a little bit as she checked him out.

Suddenly I felt homicidal.

I took a deep breath and glared at her as her eyes trailed Scott’s taught body. I wanted to rip her eyes out.

“That guy’s good!” Kevin’s loud voice took my attention. He pointed to the beatboxer that was standing with the girl.

“Hey thanks, man!” The guy said back before an announcement came over the intercom. We all had to report to our rooms.

We walked down a large hallway and eventually found “Pentatonix”’s room. I felt like a celebrity or something crazy. We had our own dressing room!

Across the hall I saw the same group of people filing in and I swallowed as I waited for the brunette girl to walk by again. She did and she peeked in at Scott again, a little smile forming across her face before she saw Scott pick up Kirstie and swing her around. Jealously swept over her face and she proceeded on into her room. I couldn’t help but laugh to myself.

Kevin shut the door behind him when he came out and then he put his hands together. “This is so exciting.” He said. “They want us working on our first arrangement I think.”

Excitement washed over me as we started to work together, coming up with different songs that we could do. A knock on the door came about half an hour later and I got worried that it was the girl from across the hall coming to introduce herself. Scott answered and a girl, not the same one, was standing on the other side.
