Chapter 14 - Dinner with a cheater

Seonghwa pulls out my chair and beckons me to sit. With a small and polite smile, I oblige and thank him kindly. He moves quickly and sits across from me - a breeze of his prominent cologne hits me in the face and I shudder.

To find some kind of comfort, I play with the hem of my black cocktail dress as I peer down at the menu, struck in disbelief over the prices. Seonghwa wasn't kidding, this restaurant is expensive.

"Do you know what you want?" I hear him ask, voice low and deep to match the somber restaurant atmosphere.

I look up upon hearing this familiar voice, and as our eyes lock, my stomach bubbles in the same way it used to when we first started going out.

And I hate it.

His eyes are sharp and clear as he looks into my orbs, obviously looking quite involved in this date. I glance down at the menu. "Uhh I think so...I was thinking of getting the (food name). What about you?"

"The Surf and Turf. It was good, I had it the last ti-" And in an instant, he cuts himself off and avoids my eyes. Huh. He seemed fine looking into them just a few moments ago.

I know what he was going to say. And it makes my stomach bubble up again, except in a more uncomfortable and hurtful way more than anything.

This causes a few moments of silence to sweep over the bland air.

And while he avoids looking at me, I send my gaze piercing into his soul. "Last time...?" I try to give him the chance; the benefit of the doubt to finish his sentence.

He doesn't answer and instead pretends to skim over the lavish and expensive meals on the menu. I sigh out loud. "Seonghwa, just tell me."

He lets out an exaggerated sigh and sits back in his chair, lifting his head up timidly. Yet, his eyes look everywhere else. "....I came here with Sana a while back...."

Aaaaand there it is. The truth. My fucking demise. He couldn't even have the courtesy to look me in the eyes and tell me it.

How much of a coward are you, Seonghwa?

"Oh." That's I say. That's all I even want to say.

He seems confused by my answer. "That's it...?"

Now it's my turn to give him an exaggerated sigh. "Look, I frankly don't want to get into it. You lied. You cheat. And you take me to the same restaurant you took the side chick? Doesn't that seem weird to you? Can you at least imagine how I'd feel?"

His eyebrows scrunch up in guilt. He places his hands on the table only to start picking at his fingers again. Looks like he's anxious. "If I could take it all back, I would, okay? I-I wanted to take you here because you mentioned it before. This wouldn't have been my first choice, it's just that you wanted to go here...."

Consequently, I soften at his words. His kind and considerate words...

He was just looking out for me, right?

Why does he make it so difficult for me? The more I spend time with him, the more I'm having difficulties to convince myself that Seonghwa's ready for this relationship.
