Chapter 18

"We need to go back, Exton," Gemma said as she took a bite of her toast. Exton sat in front of her in bed and was focused on his eggs. He didn't look up at her as he stabbed the pieces with his fork.

"Don't you think it's safer to be here?" Exton said after a while.

"They'll be wondering where we are," Gemma tucked her hair behind her ears and sighed. "We can't hide here forever...Tobias...he's gonna want an answer for what happened."

Exton didn't speak. He remained silent as he contemplated on how to keep her here.

"And your parents," Gemma continued. "I'm sure they're worried too."

Exton sighed and set this fork down. He ran a hand through his hair as Gemma watched him. She could see how tired he was.

"I went already," He said. He still hadn't looked at Gemma. Suddenly, the tray of breakfast in between them was the most fascinating thing he had ever seen. Gemma watched as he flipped each plate to see what was in it.

"What?" She asked in confusion.

"When you were asleep, I traveled back to go see everyone," Exton finally looked up.

Gemma stared at him in confusion and a little bit of hurt, "You left me here alone? You know what happened to me if you're not around."

"I was only gone for a minute at most," Exton pacifIed her. "You know I wouldn't leave you alone."

Gemma didn't say anything. It was now her turn to avoid eye contact. "What happened?"

"I told everyone that we're mates," Exton lied.

Gemma's eyes snapped up. "What?"

"Yeah," Exton said. He looked into her blue eyes but had to look away quickly. "I told them we're mates and we're in love. I told them you were here with me and safe."

"What did they say..." Gemma inquired.

"At first Lafayette and Tobias didn't believe it. But my little show in the greenhouse was enough evidence for them...they accepted it."

"Oh?" Gemma was unconvinced.

"What can they do?" Exton asked sighing again. "You're my mate. We are meant to be together. I told them we would be staying here for a while."

"They accepted that?"

Exton nodded, "Yep."

"They didn't say anything about...Azazel and finding her?" Gemma narrowed her eyes at Exton.

"I told them I would still be there to help them...but honestly with you here, I think they'll find nothing there. They'll give up soon."

Gemma didn't know what to say. It all seemed too good to be true to her. Did Lafayette and Tobias really give in that easily?

When the minute hand on the watch ticked by and Gemma did not speak, Exton looked up at her.

"Something on your mind?" He asked.

"I don't know...Lafayette...he accepted us?" Her mind wandered back to the times when she would hear him rage on and one about Xavier and his kind.

"He love you Gemma..." Exton tried to go for sincerity. "He wants you to be happy."

"I don't know Exton...it seems strange."

Irritation flickered in Exton's eyes. "Do you not want to be here with me?"
