Chapter 31

Exton and Caspian followed the soldier deeper into the cave. They entered a narrow passage that was filled with hushed whispers of a thousand voices. Caspian remained close to Exton. For the first time in a while, he was beginning to fear for his life. He no longer had the cushion of immortality to sit on.

"Caspian," Exton whispered in the dark.

"Yes," Caspian moved even closer to Exton to hear him over the voices.

"You're squeezing the shit out of my arm,"

"Oh!" Caspian eased his grip on Exton's arm. "Sorry."

"Why are you acting so weird?"

"Because we're in hell!" Caspian snorted.

Over the soldier's shoulder, Exton and Caspian spotted an entrance. They hurried behind the man and stumbled into a clearing.

The cave was larger than the ballroom in Xavier's palace. Hundreds of people lingered in every corner of the place. They wore various uniforms from militaries from all over the world.

"This section is for everyone that died on the battlefield," the soldier explained. "War is always in fashion."

Caspian nodded. "I can attest to that."

The soldier weaved in and out though the crowd and Exton and Caspian followed him. They followed him all the way to the right side of the cave where an old man slumped against the wall, motionless.

The man's olive skin was like leather stretched over his bones. He was so frail and bony. His rib cage was visible as he laid against the wall. The gray stubble on his face made him look like a dandelion in the summer.

"Hey Hector," the soldier shook the man's shoulder. "You got visitors."

Caspian and Exton looked at each other and then at the man in front of them.

"This is Hector?' Caspian asked.

The soldier nodded. "He doesn't say much...but maybe seeing a family member might help."

Caspian took a deep breath. "She's going crazy over him?" He mumbled under his breath low enough for just Exton to hear.

Caspian moved forward to shake the man's shoulder but Exton's hand shot out and pulled him back.

"That's not him," Exton said.

Caspian looked at Exton and then back at the pitiful man in front of them. Exton's face was determined. He turned around and looked around the room.

"What do you mean that's not him?" Caspian asked.

"Azazel is attracted to power," Exton explained. He eyes the soldier that tried to eavesdrop on their conversation. "She is drawn to strength, whether it be physical or magical."

Caspian turned to look at the old man on the floor. "You're right..."

"Where is Hector?" Exton narrowed his eyes at the soldier. "The real one..."
