The Stormcloak soldier swung his battle axe in a wide arc at Hadvar. I saw the blade rip through his armor and pierce his flesh. He let out a stifled grunt and jumped back.
Even more quickly, he lashed out with his sword and gave the soldier a wide gash on his left arm. The soldier winced and swung once more, grazing the same spot on Hadvar's torso that he had hit just seconds before. With a yell, Hadvar stabbed his sword and cut into the Stormcloak's side.
Hadvar's assailant yelped in pain and fell to his knees, but the Imperial wasted no time in delivering the final blow, right through his stomach. The rebel lifelessly crumpled to the ground.
He turned to the next attacker just in time to see me run my sword clean through the other soldier's back. I yanked it out again and slashed her again for good measure, and so she joined her comrade in the void of death.
"That's the end of that," Hadvar said emotionlessly as he sheathed his sword. I did the same.
I looked down at the first person I had ever killed. I felt pity because we meant no harm, but at the same time, she was a condemned prisoner to begin with. A woman and a rebel! This would make for an interesting tavern story. That was, if I could escape from this nightmare in one piece.
"Let me see if I can get this door open," Hadvar muttered as he struggled with our next obstacle. "No use," he shrugged after a few seconds. "It's locked."
I glanced at the soldier I had killed. A small key was laying by her side, coated in blood.
"That should do the trick," Hadvar smiled as I walked up with the key and slid it into the lock. The door easily swung open.
I stopped to grab a couple cabbages from a cart before we moved on. I wasn't the best cook, but it was better than going on with no food at all.
I slid on the fur gloves he had picked off the male soldier and jogged down the staircase ahead of us, wondering what was in store for me next.
