Steve’s eyes snapped open as he heard someone knocking on his window. He yawned and checked the time. 22:59. He started work in forty-five minutes. He opened the small sliding door that lead to the small balcony, and consequentially to where the knock came from.
“Oh, hello Foxy,” Steve mumbled sleepily, motioning for her to come in. She swept past him inside, leaving him to suddenly jerk awake. “FOXY?” he shrieked, more to himself than the animatronic in question. She slapped her hand over his mouth and swung him onto his couch, pinning him there.
“Shhhh,” she shushed him. Steve nodded fearfully. She allowed Steve to sit up and she sat motionlessly beside him. “So, yeah,” she started. “I decided to visit you before your shift starts, you know, to tell you how this is gonna work.” She sounded very uncertain, but with a tinge of authority. She was trying to sound like she was in control, but her emotions she shouldn’t have were getting the better of her. “The guys will be suspicious if I manage to catch you so early on again, so I’m not going to be able to cover for you tonight. Basically, you have to play the game. And they say they didn’t hear any screams last time, and we both know why. I covered it up by saying I gagged you, but that won’t work again ‘cause they said they liked hearing the screams. And if I don’t try to catch you, they’ll get real suspicious. So, all in all, I’m your enemy again, really sorry.” She looked away and fled out the window. Steve shivered, and it wasn’t because if the draft coming through the open door. Steve stood there, wondering what had just happened. She... covered for me? So that’s why none of the animatronics showed up. Steve sighed and picked up his keys. He was up to his forth night. Just one more after that and he was free... But in the mean time, how would he survive? He hadn’t even made it through the second night! He frowned and picked up his keys. He knew for sure they weren’t bluffing about knowing where he lived, so he supposed he just had to go and see what would happen. He shrugged and walked down the hall towards the elevator. He arrived at the ground floor of the sleeping apartment building and made his way to his car.
Steve took a deep breath and pushed the doors open. He walked briskly to the security centre, afraid the game would start without him. He checked the clock. 11:59 pm. He shivered and clutched his torch to his chest, glancing down at the mask to make sure it was there. Beeep. The hour changed over and Steve immediately flicked the camera on and wound up the music box. He shined his torch in the hallway, relieved to find no one waiting there. His torch fizzled out and wouldn’t shine.
“It’s a torch! It runs on its own fucking power source! How in the hell could you possibly HACK IT?” In his rage he threw his torch down the hallway. He picked up the iPad and quickly exited out of the camera mainframe. “Alright, let’s see how you like this.” Steve brought up Play Store and downloaded the app he was looking for. “Come on, come on!”
“Hello!” Steve quickly flicked the cameras back on and wound up the music box. He then went back to the home screen and found that his app had finished downloading. “Aha!” Steve tapped the screen, turning on the flashlight app. He could turn it off and on with the volume buttons. “Perfect.” He put the screen back onto the cameras, but kept the app running in the background. He flashed his new, and surprisingly more powerful, torch down the hallway. Old Bonnie, Freddy and Foxy were all there. He threw on his mask and flashed the torch down the corridor constantly, while holding down the wind up button. “Haha! This thing never runs out of power! I’m invincible!” Steve shouted. Silence. All of the animatronics in the hallway were frozen.
“That’s against the rules.”
“Against the rules.”
“He’s a rule-breaker.”
“Against the rules!”
“Against the rules!”
Against the rules!” The whispers were all around him. The lights shut off, and all power drained from the building. Steve gulped and dropped the now-dead iPad that had been hooked into the mainframe.
“Cheater!”
“Rule Breaker!”
“Asshole!”
“Against the rules.” The whispers did not stop, and they sounded like they were getting closer. Steve’s heart was pounding in his chest. It felt like it was going to burst out. Two white orbs appeared, softly illuminating old, tattered brown jaws. Old Freddy. Steve stood completely still, hoping the mask would still work. Then it was yanked off his head, and Steve was staring at a white masked face. The emergency lights kicked in, half-lighting the area, but the figure was gone.
“Good old Marionette,” Chica 2.0 giggled. “It’s a shame he never wants to join in the fun.” There was a dark, rumbling chuckle.
“More fun for us,” Old Freddy replied, chuckling evilly again. Steve couldn’t see them fully, he could only see silhouettes and so was finding it hard to keep track of the conversation.
“Is he going to play with us?” a childish, innocent-sounding voice asked. Steve had to guess it was Balloon Boy because it sounded exactly like the ‘Hello’s he got. He then heard a noise like a radio stuck between two stations and saw a shadow hanging from the roof. Steve finally realised he hadn’t made a sound since the power went out. He chose that moment to scream.
