What am I doing? I feel so stupid, unable to fight back. I’m at a loss for words...even in my own thoughts.
As she ran farther and farther from him, the choking within Elaine grew heavier amid every stride she took. Eventually she dropped to the floor, holding back the rupturing sobs that wanted to escape so desperately. Her tears hit cold tile.
But the fear of her unseen, revolting current state being discovered by an aloof person granted her the faux willpower to stand up once again. She resumed darting to her destination, filled with anxiety. How ironic that he would spot Elaine in this situation.

What is she doing?
That was the first thought that came to mind when he saw Elaine in the lonely hallway, on her hands and knees, face red and body shaking.
I’ve never seen her act like this before…! Elaine?!
The girl bounded off, turning into the stairway leading to the roof.
How unexpected… Well, I guess I have time to play.
A familiar grin stretched across his face; the sinful grin of a predator ready to chase the so innocent victim. Breaking into a sprint, he began his pursuit.
After a brief amount of time the boy made it to the roof entry. Noticing they were already opened, and quite damaged, he took no care to keep the chains as they were previously. He slammed open the doors with ease, only to find a girl he knew was Elaine…but her nature entirely another. The aura surrounding her has changed, and for the worse. His heart sank to the lowest level as she turned her head, revealing that face no person would want to see crying.

Alex?! Alex Knox?!
Elaine sat on the concrete of the roof in absolute silence. They stared at each other, exchanging faces of utter alarm, though on Elaine’s side, more devastation than anything.
Why Alex? Him, of all people on God’s green earth! This is going to be the end of my peace; he’ll never stop teasing, annoying, and agitating me because he saw this weak side of me. Just, anybody else! I was expecting… Terrence…
AGH!
Alex made the first move. “Elaine, what’s wrong? Who did this to you?!” he demanded.
Putting on her angry grimace, she snapped back to his rousing questions. “What business do you have here? More important, why do you care?”
“I came here because I saw you crying! Isn’t it typical that when a boy sees the girl he likes crying her eyes out, to comfort her? You don’t understand the simple feeling I’ve been trying to get through. It’s been countless weeks since I first affirmed that I like you, no that I love you. You shouldn’t be asking questions whose answers you already have!” Alex was talking calmly; more timid than how he usually behaved.
“I already gave you my response to your confession. Every answer is going to be the same.”
“Oh, really? Really! Since when could you predict the future, huh? Is it somebody else? Are you in love with somebody else?!” He nearly screamed and his face was bursting with rage.
For a long few seconds, Elaine stayed silent, diverting her eyes. “That doesn’t mean any—“
“Answer me!” He shouted, voice reverberating off into open space. Alex was beyond the point of self-control and sanity. “Like to share who finally got into your heart? Are you just afraid that I will embarrass you? He must be better than me, right? Maybe if you would tell me who it is, I’d finally give up!”
She stood there stunned by his constant barrage of insults. “It’s not… like that…”and the tears began to roll down her face.
It’s so unfair…
Tears literally streaming from her eyes, she turned around so that her back faced Alex to conceal her shame.
He needs to leave me alone. Everyone needs to just leave me alone!
Unexpectedly, a pair of arms enveloped around her from behind. There was no force, but gentle warmth seeping in, curiously soothing Elaine.
Alex leaned in toward her ear, delicately whispering “I’m sorry. Don’t cry.”
She stopped her cries.
Laying his head on her shoulder, they remained this way. Neither of them moved in these lingering moments, first because she was caught off guard, then because both found some kind of odd solace in each other. There was some comfort in his embrace, and was also something that absolutely stunned Elaine since this was unheard of in the land of Alex Knox. She opened her mouth to speak, but sooner than she could, the clatter of the door intercepted her idea.
Looking through the corner of her eye, Elaine distinguished the unmistakable stature of a man, frozen in disbelief, and suddenly her entire world collapsed yet again.
The name came out strangled, as if the very word was the source of her suffocation.
“T-Terrence..?”
