Surprise Visitor

To my surprise, Melanie had waited for me by the tree in the break area. I smiled at her as she walked towards me and I met her halfway. Her eyes widened in surprise as she looked behind me.

"That's your car? And you come to school with him," she asked in awe. I laughed as Jaquez walked up behind me, both of us walking from my Corvette. I nodded and she threw goo goo eyes at Joc. I gagged internally and stopped in front of her.

Joc gave her an awkward, lopsided smile, which seemed to make her day as her eyes lit up like a Christmas tree. I snapped her back to attention and she looked back at me apologetically, her cheeks darkening scarlet.

"Why did you wait for me," I asked her. She shrugged and smiled at me.

"Well, I don't have other friends, so why not? Besides, I wanted to look at the list with you," she said. I felt a strange feeling in my chest to hear that I was her only friend. She was incredible! How could anyone not want to hang out with her? Unless she didn't want to hang out with them. Then that would be a slight problem.

I gave her a smile, hoping that she didn't notice my pause, but her big baby blues seemed to narrow a bit.

"Come on then. Let's go," I told her. She dropped the suspicious look almost instantly and followed me into the main hall.

When we made it to the bulletin board, there were a couple of other guys up there and I scanned the list. Jaquez made it. Melanie made it. I made it! Haha yes! Victory is mine! Melanie looked at me, though her eyes didn't show excitement. It looked more smug than anything. I smiled back down at her and looked back at Jaquez who wore his normal blank expression.

"Cool," he said indifferently. With that, he turned and walked down the hall, which I'm guessing was the direction of his first period class. I turned and walked with Melanie down the hall, talking about random things until we reached her class and we dispersed.

The day dragged by until lunch and unlike yesterday, I actually went into the cafeteria. There were people everywhere in here, of course, and I scanned the crowd for my pack, but my eyes landed on Melanie first. She sat at a table alone that was somewhat close to the trash can. I grabbed my tray, filled it with food, and walked over to where she was sitting alone and I sat down directly across from her in the middle of the table.

"Hey," I said. She didn't look up when I spoke and I realized that she had earbuds in and was looking down intensely at her phone. I smiled a little and tapped her shoulder and she jumped. When she saw that it was only me, she smiled.

"Oh hey. What's up," she said. I shrugged a shoulder and picked up the slice of pizza on my tray and took a bite.

"Nothing. What are you listening to," I asked. She shrugged in indifference and glanced back at her phone.

"It's just a documentary on how the world will implode one day and before that happens then all the mass, bloody murders will happen," she said coolly. I stopped chewing for a second and stared at her. She was one weird cookie.

"That's lovely," I said after a moment and she chuckled. Then, I felt a familiar presence behind me and Jaquez had walked over and took the empty seat beside me, close to the wall. When I looked back over, Melanie's eyes were glued to him, as usual whenever he was around. I shook my head slightly.

"Hey. Are you coming to practice today," Jaquez asked. I was about to answer and call him a dummy because he knew that I was but then I realized he was talking to Melanie and my eyebrows shot to my hairline in surprise. She seemed just as shocked as I was, if not more.
