Chapter 4
Monday arrived and Elisa got herself ready for a day that felt like her first at Jameson High. She was fine until she had received the text late last night, from Michael.
It read; Shane missed a lot of school, he’s in all of our junior classes. I’ll see you tomorrow Elisa, sleep tight xxx.
Oh dear, she thought. Kisses. Michael would be so hurt if he found out his older brother and the girl he just met made out on a hospital bed, it would crush him. She was just replying with a very simple ‘See you tomorrow’, when she heard something outside, it sounded like a scream and tyres screeching, but she thought it was maybe just a cat. So she went to sleep.
Now Elisa, 10 minutes before she set off for school, lay on her bed thinking. She had spent a while curling her hair today, but she didn’t care if it got spoilt. She was wearing a dress, it was pink, clutched at the waist with a black belt and covered with little black bows. Over that she wore a black blazer with ¾ length sleeves and on her feet she wore a pair of black flats. Her make-up on that day was carefully done: her lashes were long with black mascara, her cheeks were rosy with blush and she had a delicate pink coloured lipstick on. She looked in the mirror once again and saw her reflection staring back. She noticed then, for the first time in days the necklace she wore and never took off. It will always protect you when you need it, her dad had told her when she was small; never take it off Elisabella, never. And she hadn’t taken it off, ever.
The words of her father stayed in her mind the whole drive to school. She parked up and left the car. Michael quickly noticed her and began to walk over, along with the rest of the witches, minus Cassie. That was unusual and what more, Caleb looked uncomfortable and extremely sad. Michael nodded as they finally reached Elisa.
“Elisa, something happened, Cassie, her parents reported her missing last night and nobody knows where she is. She was suppose to meet up with Caleb this morning for coffee but didn’t show”, Michael explained, sadly.
Oh no, it wasn’t just a cat. Elisa remembered, the first few night she had arrived at her house-she had seen Cassie sitting on a swing outside, looking at the stars. That’s what she must have been doing that night and then someone must have taken her.
Caleb stepped forward and spoke. “There’s something else Elisa, I went round her house today, to see how her parents were, and found this on the ground.”
He held out his hand and Elisa saw for the first time what Caleb had found on the ground, and then gasped. Oh no. No. No. No! It was a small coin like object, copper coloured, old and with a symbol engraved onto it. It was an upside down triangle with a line going through it and a skull on the inside of it. To witches, the triangle and line meant earth and the skull...well, that meant death in the earth. She knew then what this meant.
“Caleb, I’m sorry. The hunters they have Cassie. They usually leave an object like this to tempt us to go and save the person taken. It’s a trap; but if we don’t go, they will kill her and bury her in the ground”, Elisa whispered.
Caleb took a step back, then another and then fell down to the floor. He sat there, like a child, rocking back and forwards, crying Cassie’s name. Michael and Anna both knelt down beside him and whispered things in his ears. Elisa noticed that Anna and Michael were holding hands, and couldn’t help the burn of jealousy she felt inside. Then she realised something- they were casting a spell, a calming spell. It would not make Caleb forget what was happening but it would at least bring him to his senses enough to last the day at school. They were only holding hands to perform more powerful magic and this made Elisa feel a little better about it.
Michael cleared his throat and looked each one of the witches in the eyes, “We need to act, but not now. We need to go to class and keep calm, think about our plan. I could maybe try and get some of the other, people, to help if need be, I’m sure that Tyler, Zach and maybe even Kayla will help us out. The others, don’t even bother, they will just say no.”
Elisa was confused. He said there were only 5 witches at the school, so why was he talking about others? Maybe, oh god, he was talking about the other ‘supernatural beings’. The vampires and werewolves. She had even encountered a ghost before back in England. She had always made sure to steer clear of the vampires though; they had the power to use compulsion on even the most powerful of witches and were quick moving. Werewolves had un-imaginable strength and power, but were agile and graceful at the same time. Still, she knew that they had a lethal bite to a human, witch and even vampire, a terrifying prospect to even consider.
Caleb spoke in a hushed yet agitated tone, “Michael, Tyler nearly killed Elisa the other day, remember? He’s a jackass, who just happens to be a Werewolf. He may be strong but that doesn’t really make him the obvious choice to ask help from. I’m thinking Ethan, he may be interested.”
Michael considered, thoughtfully and Elisa could see him staring directly at Caleb, as if he was telekinetic? No, not possible. Ari sighed and opened her mouth to speak.
“Listen, we all know you both have those ‘special powers’ but I really can’t see the point of keeping secrets right now. I suggest I ask Tyler as we made-out at the spring formal last year and he may be convinces to help. Zach should be easy, he’s all ‘let’s protect the poor innocent humans’ anyway and Kayla, do not get me started on that whore, sure she may have a set of fangs but I swear if that bitch irritates me again, I will start a fire in my mind and light her up from the inside-out and as for Ethan, well, I say we get him on board,” Ari said, loudly.
Anna eventually spoke after a long silence, “Arianna,” she said, using her fellow witches full name, “Kayla could floor you quicker than you could light a fire so cut the crap and just try and be open-minded.”
So it was settled. All five of them, after a few more minutes of discussion, split off to ask the help they needed. Elisa’s first class was Gym with Anna, so their mission was to find Kayla and talk to her whilst trying to at least reach average national fitness level.....
