Chapter 5
Even in such a crisis, Elisa could not deny she was embarrassed to wear the school compulsory Gym uniform. It was black shorts, and a white t-shirt. It sounded simple and not to bad when she first arrived at the school, until they were forced to perform gymnastics in view of all the boys on the football fields and the baseball pitches. Undergarments, that would give them decency, were banned and all girls were forced to perform handstands in just the shorts and t-shirts (without being tucked in), meaning their bra’s ended up on show to all the guys and their privacy was exploited. The cheerleader-type girls were not bothered by this and gladly flipped themselves about until boys gathered and cheered them on.
She stood near the back of the group with Anna while the ‘show’ went on and eventually, Anna pointed to a girl stood literally 3 steps away from them. Ari’s description of the vampire was bland ‘Blonde, Bitch, Whore’ were the words she described Kayla as, but Elisa could tell she was so much more. The girl was unrealistically beautiful. Her skin was as fine and as smooth as white marble, her eyes were blue were just amazing and her hair was just...wow. It was blonde, she would give Ari that, but it wasn’t dyed that colour, it was naturally as shiny and bright as the sun and fashioned into a style that Elisa didn’t think was humanly possible to make that perfect. Well, of course Kayla wasn’t human.
Elisa leaned in closer to Anna, “What’s the deal with this Kayla girl anyway?”
Anna looked over to Kayla and then looked back to Elisa and began to speak, “She’s our age, Me, Ari and Kayla, we used to be best friends and do everything together, but then she got with Zach and began spending a lot of time with him -we didn’t mind and we were still friends. Anyway, they had an argument one night; she got drunk at a party with Ari that I was too sick to go to and they both went up to the roof. They were so drunk, and both of them were stood on the edge of the roof. Anyway, Ari fell and Zach caught her and as he did Kayla slipped from the edge and fell too. He couldn’t catch her in time and she hit the floor. He fed her some blood and to cut a long story short she died, then woke up craving red stuff. Ari, she didn’t handle it well, she tried to be friends with Kayla still but then, she lost control one day and bit Ari, nearly killed her too.”
The story Anna had told her was so sad, yet explained so much. It explained why Ari often touched the side of her neck and winced, it explained why she refused to speak to Kayla, and it explained why she behaved the way she did. Zach had saved her life for the price of her best friend’s; she felt guilt, anger and sadness.
Elisa built up all her courage and walked slowly over to Kayla, who was pretending to stretch. She missed her footing and fell into the sharp edge of some gym equipment, cutting her down the front of her left leg. It hurt like hell.
Kayla looked up sharply at Elisa, and her eyes quickly zoned in on the blood. Elisa could see Kayla’s vampire teeth sliding down slowly, looking sharp and deadly. She could see Kayla breathing hard and trying to keep control and most surprisingly, she could see Kayla’s beautiful blue eyes turn demonic red. Then, in a second, all that had gone and she looked like a normal, extremely pretty, teenage girl again. The Vampire walked over to her and held out a hand.
“I would never hurt anyone, not again, it’s just sometimes the blood does this to me. I can stop myself from attacking,” she whispered and she pulled Elisa from the ground. Then Kayla picked up an empty bottle and bit her own finger until blood began to drop from it into the bottle and then held it out to Elisa. “Here, drink this. I know you’re a witch but this is easier and it makes me feel good to help people.”
Elisa, trying not to hurt Kayla’s feelings, took the bottle and drank the metal tasting blood. Her leg healed quickly and soon the only trace left of the injury was the dried blood.
“We need your help,” she said, and then continued to tell the vampire what happened and then pleaded for her help to get Cassie back.......
