It's her first anniversary without him.
Everyone else long forgot what happened to Bill that day, everyone but Carnation. How could she forget losing her love? Her other half?
The splendor of her life....
She takes a solo roadtrip to Acadia National Park, which was Bill's favorite place in Maine. The drive is excruciating, and Carn can't help but shed tears every half hour or so.
It's late at night when she arrives, so majestic stars of purple and deep blue twinkle above her. Gently, she lays a tattered blanket on a secluded spot.
The galaxy above is marvelous tonight, and Carn breathes all of it in. The stars, the air, the trees, everything.
"I know you had to leave, baby, but I miss you everyday," she whispers to the sky, twisting her wedding ring.
A new feeling washes over her then. Not one that she's never experienced, but one that Carn hasn't had since it happened.
Peace.
Though she'd only spent twenty three years of bliss with him, it felt like an eternity. And she realizes now that soon she will spend eternity with him.
Carn knows she'll never love anyone again like she does Bill, except for their children. But she was so blessed that she had that equally requited love, especially such a tremendous amount of it.
And, of course, she'll never for a minute stop loving him the way she has all these years.
She beams through her tears.
"We're going to be okay, Bill."
What have we to show?
Barren feelings and dust for crow
We can't ever know
When it's time to goThat's the way to see the end
Glowing out along the river bend
It's not goodbye, my only friend
Yesterday started over again
