“I’m listening.” Stella stepped back to relax on one of the bed poles after popping Mary’s back with two pillows. It’s been three hours since Mary was revived but she was yet to utter a word.

“Stella do calm down,” Jade massaged her temples silently praying for the deliverance of whatever had possessed her friend.

“I said…”

“It’s a long story and I doubt if you’ll believe me.” Mary sighed in defeat.

Jade supported her chin with her elbow as she looked up at her friend. “We have all evening.”

“Fine.” She clutched her rosary which rested on her neck before proceeding. It started when I was five, I was told that I’ll always wake up early to sit outside with our dog; pointing and talking about nonexistent things. The bond between my dog and I was so strong that I'll always insist to bath and sleep with him.”

“Gross,” Stella scrunched her face.

“Yes. Unfortunately, it grew to me seeing things, like knowing when someone would die or go missing, knowing when someone was about to be poisoned to even locating the graves of our ancestors.”

“Blood of Jesus,” Jade and Stella whispered together.

“Well, we later got to know that my mother had waited for twenty years for a child before looking for every means to have one after my father’s third wife had bore him three sons. Her search led her to many native doctors who in turn told her to do lots of unspeakable things and somewhere along the line I was conceived. Sadly, she died when I was three and couldn’t pay the pledge she ought to when I turned five and that led to my attachment to the dog she bought when I was born.

My father tried all he could to free me from this curse but to no avail and his demise was what compounded the whole problem. My family accused me of killing my father and the villagers banished me from the land after starving me for days. I was rescued by some foreign missionaries who brought me to this town after nursing me to my best self. They contacted the Pope who promised my rescuers of my deliverance before the end of the year but sadly, it all started again.”

"Hmm!" the girls sighed, pondering on what she'd told them.

For some minutes no word passed between them, just the voice from the radio and the chattering of the other girls filled the room.

"So now," Stella sneezed. "Sorry. Is there like, a solution. You know, something you can do in place of the sacrifice, something that can stop all this."

"Prayers of course," Jade answered.

Stella rolled her eyes, "Jade shut up for once. Thank you. So Mary," She turned back to her. "Do you know if there's something you can do. Considering the fact that someone's reaching out to you to save them. Of which I don't understand like..."

"There might be. Maybe she's among the Above Surface Students." Mary reasoned with her.

"Is that their name?" Jade inquired.

"I refer to them as that."

The next day the girls quietly enter the libary, acknowledging the librarian with a nod as they move to the back of the libary.

"Please, do tell me again what we're looking for." Stella scratched the nape of her neck as they move deep down to the belly of the libary.

"We're going to look for a book in the archive section."
