Chapter 11

The next morning...

I go downstairs and help Barbara make breakfast.

"Good morning." She says.

"Good morning."

"How are you feeling?"

"Better."

"Good. Are you going to the event today?"

"Yeah, Theo wants me to watch for cops."

"Ooh, good luck. Let's just pray Jim or his partner Harvey won't show up."

"Yeah. Are you going?"

"Yep. I'm your brother's assistant."

"Nice! I'm proud of you!"

"Thanks. Anyways, we should get ready. Jerome wants to surprise us so he said meet in a half hour at the event."

"Okay." We then got ready.

30 minutes later...

We arrive at the event. As I walk in, I already hate it. It's one of those charity events that rich people go to. Gross. We walk to the back of the stage, and see some dude.

"Umm sir, have you seen-"

"Surprise!" The guy turns around, revealing Jerome.

"Wait, you're a magician?" I ask.

"Well not really, but I'm in a disguise."

"Oh, for your entrance?"

"Yup! Do you like it?"

"Of course! I'm proud of you. I know you're going to shine bright on that stage."

"Aww thanks sis!"

"No problem." A woman then walks up to us. Oh no, it's Lee. That must mean... Jim's going to be here. Shit!

"Are you 'the great rodolfo?" She asks.

"That would be me! And this is my assistant." He points to Barbara.

"Hello." Barbara says.

"Hi. Well, we're going to start now. So if you need to do anything quick, do it now."

"Alrighty, thanks!" She then walks away.

"Well, I should go to the front. Just to make sure no cops barge in." I say.

"Awesome, thanks sis! Oh by the way, I'm sorry about yesterday."

"It's fine. I'm sorry for what I said."

"No worries. I know you didn't mean it anyways." I gave him a good luck hug and walked to the front. Holy shit there's a lot of people. The lights go down and only shine on the stage. Lee walks on and everyone claps.

"Good evening. I'm Dr. Lee Thompkins. For the past five years, I've had the honor of being part of the Children's Hospital. Thank you for your support. And thank you so much for coming out tonight. Over the years, we've had magicians come and entertain our children. And so tonight, we have one of the magicians here for you. Without further ado, please allow me to present to you the Great Rodolfo." She leaves the stage, as Jerome and Barbara enter. So far so good.

"For my first act, I'll require a volunteer. Let me see. Duck, duck, duck, duck, duck, duck, duck goose!" He points over to a young boy. The boy walks up to the stage. "Hello, young man. Does this handsome gentleman have a name?"

"Bruce."

"Bruce! Well, Bruce, this won't hurt a bit." He grabs a saw and saws him in half. I closed my eyes at first, but then opened it when I realized the kid is still alive, "Is there a doctor in the house?" Everyone starts laughing. Wow, I am actually surprised. Jerome isn't being bad. "For my next illusion, I'd like to call to the stage esteemed Deputy Mayor Harrison Kane." As they set up for the next illusion, Barbara's mask falls off. Oh no.
