Hello, we’re Red Velvet.
Q: Tell us about your new song.
A:
Irene: Our new song “Be Natural” is Red Velvet’s remake of SES’s original song.
Q: This question is from Saiful Anwar in Indonesia. What is the meaning behind your name “Red Velvet”?
A:
Irene: The “red” in our name symbolizes the alluring temptation of the color red and “velvet” is for the softness that one immediately thinks of. So we aim to show you strength and sophistication behind our performances.
Q: Which member is most like the mother figure?
A:
Seulgi: I think Wendy’s most like the mother figure. She’s good at cooking and takes care of everyone and she enjoys that so she feels most like the mother.
Joy: I even tried bread that Wendy made herself. It was really good. She cooks for us often and helps me with my personal problems. Wendy is like a mom to me.
Wendy: Thank you. I’ll do my best.Q: After a tiring practice session, what do you do during your free time?
A:
Wendy: We’re different. We go out shopping or sit and take a breather at a cae, or write in a journal. Or if we really just want to rest, we just stay in our dorms and talk.
Joy: After practice, don’t you have no energy? I can’t do anything after practice…
Wendy: Yes I get tired, but if we have a day off, I find the energy.
Joy: I have to eat something yummy.
Seulgi: But unni [Joy], you never go out. We call her a homebody because she never leaves the house and just watches TV during her time off.
Joy: I love kids so I watch shows like [Superman Returns] and [Dad, Where Are You Going?]. Even all the reruns. It’s therapeutic for me. I feel like I’m becoming more pure-hearted.
SeSeulgi: Really?
Joy: I am [already] pure-hearted, but more so…Q: Which singer would you want as your mentor?
A:
Joy: I really respect Bada. I saw her on [Immortal Song] before. She’s so good and her stage manners are great too. Bada’s voice in “Be Natural” is so attractive. I respect Bada.
Wendy: I respect Boa. I think she’s just an overall amazing artist, whether it’s her stage spectacle or live performance. Whenever I see her performances, I dream of us growing and becoming an artist like that, who hears many compliments from others.Q: This question is from Theresia Farida in Indonesia. Are there any other groups or singers you’re close with?
A:
Wendy: We promoted at the same time as TaeTiSeo so we often shared waiting rooms. Or even when not promoting they would come see us and say hi, which was really encouraging. During broadcasts, they’d help monitor our performances, tell us what to do, and give us tips when we were newbies. So we think we’ve gotten closer with them.
Joy: We love you.
Wendy: We want to become even closer. Thank you.Q: This question is from Stephanie Fretel in Peru. What are some differences from when you were promoting “Happiness” and “Be Natural”?
A:Irene: If I were to say that we were full of happiness when promoting “Happiness”, then I want to say we are more calm and composed
during our “Be Natural” promotions.
Seulgi: We’re not really composed in real life.
Joy: Get your hair colors ready.
Seulgi: I’m orange.
Joy: Get blue ready, pink.
Red Velvet: Happiness! Hello, we’re Red Velvet.
Wendy: I think we were brighter than this. Our voice tone was higher and we were always happy…
Seulgi: We were sweet and lively. Now? We need to get into the right mood.
Joy: Women of autumn…
Red Velvet: Happiness! Hello, we’re Red Velvet.Q: This question is from Daniela Ramos in Peru. What would you have become had you not become a singer?
A:
Seulgi: I think I could’ve gone into interior design. Though I’m not good at cleaning my room…
Wendy: [Seulgi’s] good at drawing too, so she could’ve gone into that as well.
Seulgi: I never studied or took classes [on drawing].
Wendy: But you’re still very good.
I really love music, so I think I would’ve bought the equipment and composed music at home. Or gone out to the streets with an instrument and go busking. Maybe wander around and get exposed to music from other countries, learn new genres, and ultimately just make my own music.Q: This question is from Jeniffer Segura in Peru. When preparing to become a singer, who gave you the most strength?
A:
Wendy: For me, it was my groupmates. My family is in Canada and I was alone out here in Korea so I was always missing home and having a tough time. But my groupmates approached me like family, even warmer than family, and would hug me and be my source of strength. I think I got this far really because of Red Velvet.
Seulgi: Thank you for those kind words.
Wendy: I’m the one that should be thankful.Q: Do you have any interest in acting?
A:
Joy: Doesn’t everyone?
Wendy: I want to try play the role of a easy-going, more-like-a-brother-type-of-sister. Because I’m easy-going, I think I can play that role well.
Joy: I really enjoyed [You Who Came From The Stars]. I want to try to play the role of “Cheon Song-yi”. “Boong-boong-yi”… “My little Boong-boong-yi?”
We, Red Velvet, have made our comeback with “Be Natural”, following our last song “Happiness”. Please continue to show us lots of love and look forward to what we have in store.
