I think the saddest sound is
when you hear the crack
in the person's voice
when they are about to cry.―――――√√√√―――――
One month has passed since Abigail joined school. Abigail and Gemma's friendship grew a little more, thanks to the hang out they had in Abigail's twin cousin's apartment. But Aoife started building more walls and pushing Abigail and her close people away because of the promise she made with herself. Everyday she had fresh cuts in her arms and thighs. She stopped crying and everytime she had a blank face with no emotions except for her fake smile which others would think it's her real smile except for Abigail.
She observed everything. How Aoife is pushing away people from her life. How she is storing her emotion inside her. She was trying to connect the things which she observed three years ago but it was surprisingly connecting. She decided to ask her just to clear her suspicion out. So as the bell rang for lunch break, she walked towards the school canteen. She entered and went towards the counter to collect her lunch.
After collecting her lunch, she turned around and noticed her, Gemma and Aoife's table. Luckily, Aoife was alone sitting there. She thought 'that is where Gemma is'. But then suddenly remembered that Gemma has a group project and she will be with them during lunch break. So she walked towards their table.
As she reached by the table, she noticed that Aoife was looking outside the window and was lost in her thoughts. As she kept the tray on the table, Aoife was startled but when she saw Abigail, she shrugged and again started looking outside the window like something was fascinating her. But there were only trees and bushes outside the window.
Abigail sat down in front of her and started eating her lunch. There was silence on their table except for the noises in the canteen. But Abigail decided to break the silence between them.
"Is anything wrong? If there's any, you can tell me." Abigail said.
"There's nothing wrong. I'm.. I'm f..fine." Aoife said as she shuttered while saying "I'm fine".
"I know you are not fine Aoife. Tell me, is there something which is bothering you?" Abigail's voice softened.
"Nothing is bothering me." Aoife said as she was getting frustrated.
"I know you are lying, Aoife. Stop ly-"
"I told you there's nothing wrong. Why can't you understand? I'm.. I'm fine. Just leave me alone and stop pestering me!!!" Aoife yelled as the students sitting beside their table looked at them.
"I just wanted to help you. I don't want to see the same thing repeating in front of me again. Sorry, if I pestered you." Abigail said as she stood up with her tray and walked out of the canteen.
Aoife just sat there like that for a minute, but realized that she snapped at Abigail who was just trying to help her. She covered her face with her hands and started rubbing. "What have I done?" She thought.
After lunch break, all the classes were done. Abigail didn't look or smile at Aoife or at Gemma, which she started to get suspicious about what happened but decided not to mention it. After last class, Abigail walked to her locker and noticed that Gemma and Aoife were already in the locker room. She just walked to her locker and started collecting and packing her things. Gemma was blabbing as Abigail was just listening to it. Aoife was quiet as usual but she was feeling bad at snapping on Abigail but she was scared to face her.
