My body relaxed as the heat began dissipating.

'What the hell?' I questioned.

'Thank gods that wasn't her first heat. That would have been an interesting first meeting.' A new voice chuckled.

A pair of strong arms wrapped around. Panic filled me.

'Take a breath.' Maia ordered before I could try to fight them off.

The scent of a warm barn and a bonfire wrapped around me.

'Dawn, this is Aviv and his shadow.' Maia said.

I rolled over and laid face to face with a beautiful tan faced male. His blue eyes melted softly as our gazes melded together. He smiled gently, barely showing his teeth.

"Hi." He said nervously.

"Hi." I parroted, my heart leaping to my throat.

'Puppy love,' Aviv snorted.

'There will be a time and a place for this. Right now, you need to get up.' Maia said.

I rested my forehead against his. His presence wrapped around me and we floated away from the white-tiled hell we were in.

"Get up." A gruff voice ordered.

His arms wrapped around me tighter. A small growl rumbled through him. A small gentle warmth bloomed within me.

'Lorcan.' Aviv scolded.

'It's good you're protective, Sweety, you just needed to temper it.' Maia advised.

I gave him a squeeze.

"You won't lose me." I whispered.

"I said get up." The voice boomed.

I grimaced as his boot connected with my back.

'Shit.' Maia said.

Lorcan's eyes went red. He pried himself from my grip and loomed over the mislead soldier.

"You hurt my mate." He snarled clenching his balled fists.

I rolled up to my feet and looked up at him, he had to be at least a foot taller than me. His red eyes narrowed on the soldier. I reached up and cupped his face.

"Lorcan, I'm fine." I said tilting his head forward.

His flaming red eyes flickered back to blue. I smiled.

"I'm fine." I assured.

'He's okay now.' Aviv said.

'But are you?' Maia asked.

'I will be.' He answered.

I turned to face the terrified soldier. I felt my canines lengthen.

"Kick me again and you will have to deal with me." I growled my enlarged canines peaking out.

His face paled.

"A1 and A2, follow me." The soldier ordered with a small tremble in his voice.

'Nice touch.' Maia praised.

I jumped at Lorcan's sweet hand fell on my shoulder. Instead of shrugging it off, I leaned into his affection. This is so unlike me. I shook the thought away. I took his hand from my shoulder and interlaced my fingers with his. This small amount of contact seemed to satisfy him for now. We walked side by side down the bare halls. The lights slowly dimmed until the walls were a pallor gray. I gripped Lorcan's hand tighter.
