chapter xix.

chapter nineteen —
sammy to the rescue.

Sage rubs her hands together in hope of creating some warmth as her and Mike trudge through the snow as they tried to find the way back into the mines. The two had been trudging through the snow for the past few minutes, the duo taking their time since they believed that most of the wendigos had died in the explosion that they had caused.

" Is your shoulder still hurting? " Mike breaks the silence as he looks down at Sage in concern, the shorter girl only shakes her head repeatedly making Mike frown, " You know that I know when you're lying, Sage. "

Sage huffs in annoyance but finally speaks up after a moment, " It is, but it's manageable. " She frowns at the pity in Mike's eyes, " I'm okay. It's just because of the recoil of the gun. I promise. "

" If you say so, " Mike shakes his head in response as he still doesn't believe Sage's words, but didn't want to argue with her at the moment. It wasn't the right time for petty arguments, it was the time to not be caught by wendigos and eaten alive. He glances around and looks relieved as he recognizes the nature that surrounded them, " We should be at the mines soon. "

" Thank god, " Sage nods with a small smile that quickly leaves as she shivers once again. She tugs the black jacket from the Sanatorium tighter around her small frame and looks at Mike thankfully for finding the jacket for her hours ago. He doesn't notice Sage's stare making her smile slightly as she studies him and couldn't be more thankful to be stuck with him on a night like this.

If they hadn't stuck together for most of the night, would they had even decided to try out being a couple? Would they have even admitted their true feelings?

Sage had no idea and she'd rather not think about what could've been her life right now.

She's snapped out of her thoughts by the sound of a loud screech echoing throughout the winter night making her and Mike both turn to see a wendigo covered in burns and a murderous look in it's snake-like eyes that was directed towards Sage and Mike.

Their luck may have ran out at this exact moment.

" Mike, " Sage freezes for a moment as she stares at the wendigo, her heart now hammering in her chest once again as she itches to pull the gun out of her waistband before stopping herself. They needed to run, the middle of the woods was not a good place to defend themselves. " We gotta go. Now. "

" You think? " Mike snaps in a loud tone as he rolls his eyes. He tugs Sage along with him as the two start running as fast as they can into the nearby mines with the wendigo right behind them.

Sage freezes infront of a metal door leading further inside the mines and pulls Mike to a stop next to her. Mike quickly unlaces his hand from Sage and busts the door open after a few tries before running inside with Sage right behind him.

Sage turns to close the door behind her with Mike's help, but the wendigo's burnt hands slip inside the doorway and bust the door open immediately while tackling Sage onto the ground.

" Holy shit! " Sage yells out of sheer panic as she struggles to keep the wendigo from ripping her apart, " Mike! Fucking do something! "

Grunting, Sage tries her hardest to push the wendigo away but fails as the wendigo continues trying to kill her.

" Holy shit! Hey! Over here! " Mike yells out making Sage sigh in relief.

The wendigo gets whacked in the head twice before finally dying as Sage gets pulled up by Mike as Sam quickly closes and locks the door without the two noticing.

" You okay? " Mike asks as he cups Sage's face in his hands as he checks the brunette over for any injuries.

" I'm okay. " Sage nods as she smiles slightly at Mike, " No bites taken out of me. I promise. " She finally notices Sam standing off the side and quickly steps away from Mike, " Sammy to the rescue, I see. "

" The hell are you doing down here, anyway? " Mike asks Sam in confusion.

" I was gonna warn you guys about the wendigos. " Sam explains quietly with a frown.

" I think we got it, " Sage snaps with a tight smile as Mike nods in agreement.

" Yeah. . " Sam trails off with a nod.

" Let's find a way down to where this fucker lives, " Mike states firmly as he starts to walk further into the mines with Sage and Sam right behind him.

Hopefully Josh would still be alive when they got to him. That was all Sage hoped for.
