First Day

Claudia and Lorraine were the first to buy the household, living together while they worked through college. They didn't expect Lois, a close friend of theirs, to ask for help later on down the road.

Lois' younger brother was transferring over to the same college that two of the the three women had graduated from, and she didn't have enough space to house the teen. She was rooming with two of their other friends, Wesley and Bonnie, and they only had a single room apartment. Of course, Lois slept on the couch, and Bonnie shared the bedroom with Wesley, her boyfriend.

Lorraine and Claudia owned a three bedroom, two story house with a large backyard and reasonable front lawn. The two decided to share a room when Francis came, so the third room would still be a guest room. The women would share the master bedroom, that was previously the guest room since it was the biggest.

They did accept Lois' request, and would soon accept Wesley's for his younger cousin, Frederick, as well. He would get the guest room instead of share the already smaller room that Francis had.

It took a couple of weeks for the guys to get used to living with everyone, but they came around. Roles started to show in everyone at the house, which no one really minded.

Lorraine would often be the one to remind both Francis and Frederick about scheduled chores, outings, when to eat and when to sleep; usually things an adult figure would do (even though the men were both 20 and perfectly capable).  She found herself around the house most of the time, being that she hadn't gotten an occupation yet.

Claudia worked ten hours shifts on Tuesday through Friday, Saturday and Sunday she worked from nine in the morning to nine at nine.  She had Monday's off, and would usually get to helping Lorraine around the house or finish left over paperwork in her study.

Francis was still looking for an occupation, he and Frederick both.  The two felt bad that they weren't contributing yet even though both women said that it was perfectly alright.

September eighth, a Monday. The first day of college for Francis and Frederick. Lorraine, commonly a morning person, woke up the two boys for their first classes at eight-thirty.

"Head downstairs for breakfast, I made pancakes." Lorraine spoke through Francis' door.

She did the same for Frederick as well, and went off to find Claudia. The taller woman was most likely closed off in her study, passed out at her desk again.

Lorraine got herself busy with making a cup of coffee for the redhead while the boys ate their fill. When they had finished, the two set their dishes in the sink, and went to get ready.

"Lori, we're going to head out now, thanks for breakfast!" Francis soon called, on his way to the front door.

"Alright, be safe! And do look out for each other, I'd hate to lose one of you at that campus!" Lorraine joked over her shoulder.

Frederick answered back, "W-Will do!"

Frederick wouldn't be able to drive for a few months, the teen had to get used to the new model of his prosthetic hand.

Lorraine carried a hot mug of coffee in her hands as she walked towards a closed door off to the side of her and Claudia's bedroom. She walked in, finding the redhead bent over a stack of paperwork and scrolling through an email on her laptop.

"Dia, I brought coffee. Black with two sugars, just how you like it."

Claudia jumped at Lorraine's hand being placed on her shoulder, reaching up to her ears and adjusting her hearing aids.

"Oh, sorry Rainie, someone across the street was mowing their lawn at the break of daylight." Claudia sighed.

"I know, I heard. And it lasted about five minutes before someone came out and told them off." Lorraine smiled, turning to leave after placing the mug on her desk.

"I made pancakes, if the boys left any for you." She chortled.

Claudia sighed and stretched, standing up to follow the shorter woman, "I'll make sure to thank them."

The women made it to the kitchen, both with a warm mug in hand.

"It kinda feels like I had to get up early for classes today. I guess that's what four years of that crap will do to you." Claudia took a sip of her coffee.

"Technically, if today wasn't your off day, then you'd still have to get ready for work earlier than them." Lorraine snickered.

"Oh harty-har-har. That's rich coming from the one who's still working through online college." Claudia stuck her tongue out at the shorter woman.

"I'm working for a PhD in English Literature, Miss Businesswoman!" Lorraine retorted.

"Speaking of, don't you think it's funny that Lois has to work under me? I mean, she's the head IT coordinator, but still."

Lorraine thought for a moment, taking a long sip of her tea

"Actually, it is funny. Not to be rude, but she worked harder than you in her courses to get where she is now."

Claudia snorted, "I know right? All I did was prove that I can be passively assertive, honestly."

The two laughed at the thought, and then a moment of comfortable silence followed. Claudia broke it first.

"It's been a while since the whole gang has been together, don't you think?"

Lorraine nodded, "And by 'whole gang' do you mean Clyde too? Last you told me, he was doing well up in Maine."

"I hope so, I don't know if his schedule would be free enough though. Working for a big shot fashion company like his, I doubt he'd have the time to come out to the suburbs with us." Claudia sighed.

"It wouldn't hurt to ask, wouldn't you say?" Lorraine set her empty mug into the sink, now beginning to wash the other soaked dishes.

"Maybe, but later.  I'll go gather the laundry." Claudia walked off to do as she said.

The two would have some time before the boys came home.
