Call In

The tone playing through Claudia's end of the phone had been going on for a minute at most.

"C'mon, pick up.  I know it's in your ass pocket, and it should be passed ten already." The woman mumbled.

It was soon after Lois had left to go to her own office. Claudia used her personal cell for non-work related calls.  She did have a work phone that was synced with the network inside her office, and this call clearly wasn't work related.

Someone finally picked up.

"This is Clyde Palmer, how may I help you?"

"Guess who."

There was a pause. Claudia sighed.

"Copper, it's me."

"Oh god, Claudia?! Hey! I didn't know who's number this was!"

"Yeah, it's Claudia Palmer's, Clyde.  I got a new phone and number when I moved out of Mum's place like five years ago."

The two had mainly been in contact via email.  Haven't texted, haven't called, in over five years.  Clyde was three years older than Claudia.

"Oh my god, I might start crying. How have you been?!"

"Jeez, you're still a drama queen. And it's been fine recently, I'm not an intern anymore."

"Well I hope not sob you've grown so much!"

"Don't start the water works, I can practically feel how wet your handkerchief is."

"Well I'm sorry that I haven't called you in like seven years! Once I changed my number and gave it to you my phone broke."

"Of course it did. Let me guess, you dropped it in the bath?"

"Perhaps."

"God, I surprisingly missed these stupid conversations with you. But that isn't the reason I called you."

"I was hoping it was just to talk, but what's up? Is it something with Lori?"

"No — well, it kind of is. I wanted to ask if you'd be able to come down to visit us sometime. Maybe stay a week before Thanksgiving?"

"I'll see what I can free up, but I do know that this weekend is when I'm able fly out to any state to try and publicize the company a little. I could organize it so I fly down directly into your town airport."

"That is an option, but you'd still have to be doing work, wouldn't you? I mean the weekend isn't that long."

"Actually, because of Labor Day, it's a three day weekend. I could spend one day and one night with you guys, and then go about my work."

"But Wesley and Bonnie might not be free."

"Then could you call in my stead? I want to surprise everyone. I imagine you said something about me not having enough time to come down to visit, am I wrong?"

"You're right on the dot with that one Copper. And I'll ask Lois about them, she lives with them for now."

"Oh shit, how much have I missed? We'd need more than just twenty-four hours to catch up."

"No kidding. Eight years worth you reckless dumb dumb."

"I'm definitely coming down this weekend, don't tell anyone, alright?"

"But you'd come back looking like an asshole if you just show up out of the blue. You left us, you left Rainie and I. Lois and Wesley haven't been the same, they miss having a goofball to screw around with. Bonnie, as much as she hated you, felt guilty for at least a year after you left. Don't think that isn't going to just fly away when you step through the door."

There was a pause, presumably Clyde taking in the news of what had happened in his absence.

"You left and you didn't come back. We thought you'd forgotten us. But you always sent a card on every holiday. That was all we had to know that you were still alive."

"I know I messed up, far worse than a simple 'sorry' can fix. But now is a time better than any to try and make up for what I did."

"Sigh. Just don't screw this time up. I'll call everyone else and let them know you're coming?"

"It's for the best if they at least know I'll be there soon. Thanks for talking some sense into me, that hasn't happened properly in such a long time."

"Hey, I'm still here for you Clyde. All of us are, you just need to say something."

"Thanks for calling, really. So, I'll see you soon?"

"Yeah, see you soon. Also, I'm taller than you."

"What?!"

"Love you, bye big bro!"

Claudia swiftly hung up, breathing in deeply.  She'd have to break it Lois first, who would tell Wesley and Bonnie.  Then a one-on-one with Lorraine at home.

It was later in the day when Claudia approached Lois about what was going to happen with Clyde, after her paperwork had been sorted out and majority of her inbox was clear.

"So, he's coming this weekend?" Lois looked up from her computer screen, scanning Claudia's face to see if she was lying or not.

"Yeah, he texted me the hotel he's staying at, the room number and the time his flights would be. We'll all meet at Rainie's and I's place because it's the roomiest."

"How did he react when he found out that you, his little sister, was living with his ex girlfriend?" Lois stood up after signing off for the day, and walked around to gather her things.

"He... didn't? I feel kind of glad he didn't, I really didn't need a fight breaking out between us before he even got here." Claudia sighed, walking out of Lois' office in the direction of the elevator.

"Yeah, I remember that your disputes would last up to weeks before Clyde went to college."

"Eh, the stupider ones used to stick longer. I'm still mad that he said I couldn't look like a dude." Claudia tapped her head.

"I'll have you know, I rocked short hair, he just wouldn't admit it."

"Eh, you did look nice, but I don't think it suits you at all." Lois flicked an unruly piece of hair from Claudia's face.

"You looked better in pigtails, honestly.  If you weren't so tall I bet you'd still have to have your ID checked at adult places" The two snickered as Claudia pressed the button to go down.

"I need to never go back to pigtails. Why did I think it was cool, I only looked more like a child with my height at the time."

"Y'know, I think Lori thought you looked 'cute' with pigtails. And 'hot' with shirt hair." Lois used air quotations as if to say that it wasn't coming from her.

The two stepped into the elevator and pressed the Lobby floor.

"Whatever.  I'm not going back to pigtails." Claudia tried her best to sound serious between laughs.

"But you will tell Wesley and Bonnie right? Oh! Will they be free this weekend?"

"Yes I will talk to them, and Wesley has started working nights so he can spend the day with Bonnie. So yes, they'd be open."  Lois recounted.

"Great, now I just need to tell Rainie." Claudia sighed, probably for the fifth time that hour.
