'Do you Ms. Uzma Hassan Ali agree to marry Mr. Jahangir Zaidi, son of Dr. Junaid Zaidi?' An elderly Priest asked in a confident and crisp tone.
'Yes.' A shy bride replied meekly. The Priest straightened in his place and recited some prayers. Everyone slightly bowed their head and cupped their palms together. Only a young boy stood at the corner with his arms dangling and head held high. His eyebrows furrowed and a grim look in his eyes.
Soon, the Priest left, and everyone gathered around the bride. The echo of cheers and congratulatory murmurs punctured the silence of the well-decorated room. The young boy clasped his palms against his ear and hurried out of the room. He mindlessly ran through the hall and down the stairs.
'Wow! Dad, you are so amazing. Mom didn't come with you?' The curious young boy asked his father. A gentleman kneeled beside his son and placed his hand on his shoulder.
'Your mom was busy.'
The young boy stamped his feet to the ground and pouted angrily, - 'She is always busy.'
'Yup.' The man replied lowering his gaze. There was silence and the boy was quick to pick up on it.
'Dad! Are you hiding something from me?' He questioned whilst holding his father's face in between his tiny palms. In response, his father smiled sadly.
'Nothing.' He shook his head and ruffled the little boy's hair. The boy frowned upon seeing tears glistening in his Dad's eyes. After much pestering, he gave up and sighed.
'Your mom and I—are getting divorced.' He confessed; finally.
'What is a divorce?' The boy asked innocently.
His father took a moment before he replied, - 'It means that I and your mother won't be staying together any longer and—I might lose you to her in custody battle.' He said.
The young lad immediately wrapped his arms firmly around his father's neck and pressed his cheek against his, - 'I will never, never leave you, Dad.' He cried. A moment later, he felt his Dad's arms around his waist, patted him gently and withdrew back.
'Haider, Haider.' Uzma called out as she looked around for him. Agitated, she lifted her lehenga a little bit and quickened her pace. There were few people searching as well but the young boy was nowhere to be seen. Finally, Uzma found him sitting outside in the garden. She exhaled deeply and walked towards him. Upon reaching him, she grabbed his arm and pulled him down the stone bench, where he sat.
'What kind of behavior is this, Haider?' -She spat, - 'I am the bride, yet I am running around looking for you. Have you any idea of how people are talking?' She shook him slightly.
Haider pressed his lips tightly and yanked his arm from her grip.
'I don't care. And you shouldn't either.'- He paused, - 'And why did you risk your reputation to come and find me. Let me die—like you left Dad to die all alone.' He replied furiously. Tears streamed down his cheeks and he angrily wiped them with the back of his hand. Uzma was left speechless by his words.
Haider turned to leave but she managed to come to her sense and held his hand.
'I am your mother, Haider. I have given birth to you. How can I leave you to—don't hate me, please.' Her tone mellowed down. Haider just stared at her and when she hugged him, he doesn't respond.

Haider sat in the darkroom; his back pressed against the wall. He felt a fly rest on his nose, and he twitched then he felt the dried tears on his cheeks, and he shifted.
'Ah!' He winced holding his arm tightly against his chest. When he moved his leg, it felt numb. He lowered his head. From the dim light that came from tiny cracks above the room, he could see deep bruises. He touched with his hand and hissed loudly retracting his hand back, almost instantly.
'You dare defy me. Your father hasn't disciplined you and your mother is an emotional fool, but not me. I know how to deal with rascals like you.'
'You know Haider. The mother you once loved his now my wife and the father you love and admire is no more. You, you are all alone. At my mercy. You deserve to be. You know why? Because you didn't cling to your loved ones strong enough. Perhaps you weren't passionate enough. So, you lost them.......'
