NARRATOR: It was the end of summer in that year that the fox spirit stopped coming to the tree. The young boy, confused by her sudden departure, would sit and wait for her to appear, but she never did. Saddened, eventually he stopped coming to the tree, too, thinking she had abandoned him.

NARRATOR: But the young fox had not abandoned the boy, as he so believed she had: she had resolved to go off and become a human so that she could be with him. Journeying to far away towns and villages, she watched and began emulating human girls, hoping that she could one day become like them: someone that the boy could love.

NARRATOR: It took many springs—and many failures—for the fox spirit to learn all she thought she would need to learn. But, eventually, she mastered every human skill she sought to pick up, and the time came to once more return to the plum tree and meet the boy again.
