NARRATOR: Years passed, and the fox spirit never saw the boy again. He married the merchant's daughter, and eventually inherited her father's stores, bringing prosperity and fortune to his family. Just as his father had said he would do. The fox spirit attempted to return to her immortal life, but found that she had become too human. She was trapped in this mortal life, feeling all the pain and sadness that mortals everywhere feel with no escape or respite. With each day that passed, her sorrow deepened until it was finally too much.

NARRATOR: One winter's day, she approached their plum tree, and curled up at its basin. From within her kimono she withdrew a single dagger; and after allowing herself a few, final moments to remember her beloved's face, she buried it to the hilt within her stomach. Collapsing at the tree's roots, flakes of snow began to fall from the sky as her eyes closed. By the time night had fallen, the snow had completely covered her still body. Eventually, she became the earth, and no trace of her remained in this world.

NARRATOR: The plum tree on the hill never bloomed again.
