The bottom of my black leather boots touch the ground of a road I have never walked before. A slight relief comes washing over me. It's all finally over. I am out of the disaster of a place I once called home. I am off to find a new road or path so to speak, to walk down. I don't know what that road has at the end of it, but who really knows what lies at the end of their road. I have been through so much. I have been at the very bottom, so the way I look at it, it can only get better from here.
The green haired girl begins skipping down the sidewalk in front of me. I laugh a little at the sight. 'She's incredibly weird.' I think to myself as I watch her get farther and farther down the sidewalk. I'm still not able to shake the thought of wanting to know what her story is. What kind of things did her upbringing consist of? This isn't a normal feeling for me. I have never been someone to care what another person's life was like. I know that everyone has a story, whether good or bad. I don't have enough storage space in my head to listen to all of them. I barely have enough space to recite my own sometimes, but there's just something about her in particular that intrigues me. She pulls me in, like a fisherman reeling in a bite. She's different. I can tell from the happiness she puts off. It is an act that she has put on for a long time. She has seemed to master it.
I finally manage to shake the thought from my head once more. I continue walking down the; what seemed like an endless road, until I reach a coffee shop. Coffee sounds amazing. I stick my hand in the pocket of my green army jacket, searching for any amount of change; hopeful to be able to get a coffee. As I expected, there is none. I sigh and start to walk away. I look to my right and see a chalkboard sign sitting on the edge of the sidewalk. It reads Free small coffee inside. I'm filled with joy. "Hey green girl! There's free coffee in here!" I loudly and excitedly vociferate at the skipping girl. She stops dead in her tracks, turns around and sprints towards me.
I swing open the big, old wooden door. A bell rings throughout the shop, alerting the barista's that a customer has entered. A scent of coffee beans and cinnamon smack me in the face. I hear a squeaky voice come from behind me. The girl inhales deeply. Taking in the smells. "It smells like Papa's." 'Papa's?' I think to myself. 'Is she talking about her father? Did her father own a coffee shop when she was younger?' I am so intrigued by this girl's story, it's making my throat burn, my head hurt and my palms sweaty. I can't take it anymore, I have to ask her. I take my small black coffee from the man at the counter, stepping to the side.
I watch her; stare at her, while she gently reaches her bony, malnourished hands out to grab her coffee. Wrapping one hand around the middle of the cup, her other hand caresses the bottom. She smiles at the man behind the counter. Her smile is soft and gentle, making her eyes look like they are glowing. She turns to me after she has her coffee and says. "Do you want to sit in here or do you want to go on an adventure outside? We can sit on the brick wall down the street." I think about it and sitting outside seems nice because spring day is coming. Which means it is still chilly, but it is getting warmer. After a second of thinking, I make my decision. "Let's go outside." She gives me a nod and the hand gesture for 'okay.
As the girl turns around to walk out, her hand stops; resting on the big, old wooden door. She turns to means says. "Maybe I'll tell you my story." I stop right where I am. Holding the door with my left hand, I watch as she turns away and never looks back at me. She just goes on skipping down the road as she did before. I'm dumbfounded. 'Who is this girl? How does she know what I want to hear? What makes me so intrigued with her? Why the hell did I agree to this? I have so many questions, but it seems I just have to see how this is going to play out.
