Scott's POV

Mitch hasn't been to school all week, and I'm hoping it's not because of Monday. God, I wanted to kiss him so much, but I can't get hurt again. Not after what happened last time. I'm just gonna summarize it. I started to have strong feelings for this boy, Alex. No, I wan't in love with him, but I was close to it. He said he loved me, had me, then left me. But now that Mitch left, I knew he was different, and I just wanna apologize. More than anything, I just want to hear him sing.

I walk to the lunch table to find Kirstie on the phone with someone?

"How's he doing?" she says into the phone. "Can I come see him?" "Will he let Scott see him?" "Tell him I called and that I'll be there after school." "Thanks, Skye."

"Who's Skye?" I ask her when she puts her phone down.

"Mitch's sister?"

"Where's he been? Is he alright?"

"Scott, his mom passed away."

"Is he okay?" My poor Mitch. Wait -- my?

"Scott, you've got to understand something. Mitch and his mom were close. Like, super close. I know he told you why he stopped singing, but she was his rock. And now that she's gone, he's gonna be different."

"Can I come see him with you?"

"He doesn't want you to, but I think when he sees you, he'll want to."

I look down at my hands. "I hurt him, didn't I."

"Scott, Mitch is a tough cookie on the outside, but he's been hurt before. You were different to him. I've never seen him act that way toward someone before. Except for Travis."

"Travis?"

"Travis and Mitch dated. Travis took advantage of him. It killed him. He moved away with his family, but not because of that. He moved because his uncle was in town, and Mitch's family and his uncle don't get along. His uncle knows about Mitch, and his uncle is very religious. He says Mitch is an abomination and that he is the devil, so his uncle thought he was doing the right thing in trying to kill Mitch. They found him on the side of the road unconscious. He may seem tough, but he breaks down. If you truly care about him, you've got to be prepared for those moments."

"Kirsite, he's unlike any I've met before. He's different... special."

"Then tell him."
