Jane's Short

***On the eve of her twenty-fourth birthday, Jane was still unmarried. Every Thursday her parents invited a suitable man for dinner, their eyes filled with desperation, but after years of this parade, the options were dwindling. Jane went about her life and studies as if she had no idea her parents were trying to marry her off. She hoped...***

that one day they would give up. The truth was that she'd given her heart away four years ago to someone they didn't approve of her marrying. Jane hadn't cared, though, she had told Colton they could get married anyway. He had been adamant about earning their approval first though.

She looked at his Facebook page, like she did every Wednesday, and sighed. In his efforts to earn the approval, he had joined the military. She scrolled to see where he had posted various memes and laughed at some things friends had tagged him in. Just before she gave up because she knew she was getting close to posts she had seen last week, she caught it. The picture he had posted of an open field with a starry sky. His caption read "I hope we're looking at these stars together, and I pray that I'm still the one you're thinking of when you see them. One day. Soon. I promise."

She brought her hand to her open mouth as her eyes began to water. This post was for her, and had had almost given up hope that he'd ever post it again since it had been six months or more since the last one. The stars were theirs and theirs alone, and her parents weren't going to be able to take that, or him, away from her.
