Mike^^

The stinging smell of disinfectant never leaves my nose

I drum my fingers to the music that is currently blaring through my headphones when a light tap to my shoulder startles me. Nick bends down to where I'm sitting and motions me to take my headphones off.

"Here, I know its a short notice, but I got your schedule for you and you're basically set. Your 1st period is Math which is down the hall and to your right."

I look over to where he's pointing.

"How do you know all this?" I ask.

"Lets say I went here as a kid too."

"This place is that old?" I question, "Wow." He lets out a chuckle. Footsteps leading down the hall sound magnified through a megaphone due to the fact that I'm probably the only kid at school. Because someone, cough cough, decided to wake me up a whole 2 hours before school starts. Its 6:57 and school starts much later at 7:30. The man who was walking down the hall abruptly stops and suddenly breaks into a smile. Nick meets his smile with one of his own smirks. The man then clamps one arm around his giving him a half hug his other hand holding a stack of papers with very peculiar grades.

"Hey Nicholas, long time no see" he says.

"'Course, Mike, we definitely didn't meet last Tuesday to see that football game" Nick counters back with a grin.

Once Nick pulls back from the hug, he says, "Julia, meet Mike, a teacher here at your school."

Mike looks at me and smiles, extending his hand out, "Hey, how ya doin', Julia?" he asks.

I take his hand and reply, "Fine."

"Well, I have to go now, but we'll catch up later, Right, Nick?" Mike walks away but not without grinning ant Nick with a toothy smile.

"Akward," I mumble, "Wasn't it?"

"Nah, he's my best friend, been so from highschool," he says.

"Your best friend?" I say, in disbelief, I didn't know this weird-ass guy even had friends.

I glance at the nearest clock and realize that it's almost 7:20, I look at my schedule and see Math listed as my first period class. Wonderful, at least I'll get another extra hour of sleep.

I slowly pull my only backpack over my shoulder and stand up, "So...How do I get home, the bus?"

"Course not, just text me, and I'll pick you up."

"I don't have a phone, my old family didn't give me one."

"Oh, that's fine, I'll be at the front of the school, so just go there when class is finished, 'Kay?"

I nod and slowly walk toward my Math class, Rm. 400.

"Bye Julia," Nick says that smirk back on his face, "Have a nice day."

"Yep" I mutter annoyed by him already.

Kids have started worming their way into the school and are hanging by their lockers with their friends and buddies.

Friends.

I don't really bother making any when I know I'll have to move again in a few weeks or at most months. Why bother with the responsibility, I mean it's not like I'm ever going to stick in one place.

I reach room 400 and choose a seat near the back and find a girl with her nose stuck in a book. I choose to ignore her and plop my backpack on the floor next to me. Looking up, I hope the teacher is some old fart who won't pay any attention to the kid in the back who always falls asleep.
