CHAPTER TWO
Amanda and I walked up the staircase, right after finishing dinner with all the other girls. A crowd of many girls were in front of us, eager to spend the first night in the house.Obviously,we would be the last to get to our room. Ms. Winnie had instructed us to get ready for bed, and lights to be out by eleven. So, Amanda and I agreed to get in our pajamas right when we get upstairs. Then we won't have to worry about getting washed up later.
We had finally made it to the comfort of our room when the sun was nearly gone. Amanda slipped on a pair of green pajama pants and a tank top while I put on a lavender night gown on. Amanda and I decided that there would be no way we could stay up till eleven, with all the excitement that happened that day. So, by ten, we were in our beds; lights out, chatting quietly. "So, you never really knew your parents?" I asked Amanda, after she asked about my parents.
"I have been living with my aunt since I was two. My parents didn't love me. They gave me up, and I would have been in an orphanage earlier in life had my aunt not taken me in. But she recently died, and no one could take care of me." I heard her voice crack at the end of her story.
"I'm very sorry to hear that!" I said sincerely. She was lucky she had had her aunt. I didn't have any family after my dad left and my mom died. They were all I had... and probably all I'll ever have. After Amanda's story, all was silent. "Good night." I called to Amanda, but I then realized her snoring. I rolled onto my back, looking up into the darkness of the room. Amanda must have turned over, because all I could hear was the sound of my breathing; which frightened me. I closed my eyes, hoping for sleep to come to me. But I couldn't get to sleep. So instead, I opened the curtained and looked out the window. The trees swayed as the moon shone brightly into the room. I saw nothing except the gentle rustling of the leaves on the black bay's ripples. The bay was endless, looking deeper than ever. The black color of the night made the water look eerie. The night rocked me to sleep; letting the blackness consume me.
