"Claire!" Will drawled, popping his head out the door

"Claire!" Will drawled, popping his head out the door. "It's time to eat."

My brother raised his eyebrows impatiently, staring expectantly at me as I set my rusty watering can down. "I'm going, I'm going."

His face disappeared inside the house. I trailed behind him, entering our small cottage. Mom was setting plates on the table, and dad and Will were seated, laughing. Sunlight creeped in through the windows and the open door, leaving a beautiful orange and yellow glow in the cabin.

"Take a seat, honey," mom told me. "Your necklace looks beautiful with your dress today!"

"Thank you," I replied, not bothering to correct my mom. My amulet was a beautiful soft pink, and ever since I had it I'd been wearing it around my neck. "After lunch, could I head to the castle on Bolt? I wanted to see Sage."

Mom looked up from her food, giving me a 'seriously?' look. "Sweetheart, you've seen Sage twice this week already. Bolt must be tired."

"Please?" I begged. "Sage wanted me to come again today."

"Fine," Mom groaned, rolling her eyes. "You can go. But make sure to be back by 8:00 at night. We worry."

Grinning, I shot up from my seat without finishing my food. "Thank you!" I cried, rushing out of the house before I could be stopped. I ran to the back of the house, unroping Bolt, our horse, and saddling him up. I mounted him with enthusiasm. Immediately, he took off, his hoofs pounding hard against the gravel streets.

People shouted and moved out of the way as Bolt shot through the streets. Eventually, the village stores and cottages faded away to lush green grasses and a bright blue sky. In front of me, just a few yards ahead, stood the castle.

With tall, lean walls made from stone and beautiful, intricate designs engraved into the stone, the castle was easily the most beautiful part of the country. Behind the gates, you could spot the most lush garden that led to the main entrance. It had guards stationed around the premises, one of them being my best friend and the only female guard of the royal family: Sage.

She smiled brightly as she saw me approach, straightening her posture a bit and holding her spear up. "Claire!"

"Hey, Sage," I greeted, my cheeks growing hot. I dismounted Bolt. Her fiery red hair was billowing in the gentle breeze, and her piercing eyes were gazing into mine. "I made it."

"Of course you did," she replied. "I know you wouldn't pass up hanging with the Sage! You had to give in, of course."
