"Ricky, can I get your autograph?" A little boy, no older than ten years old stood waist high, holding a 17 diecast up for Ricky to sign. We were standing around victory lane after all of his media obligations for winning the pole.
"Hey little man, nice car!" Ricky took the car, smiling as he signed the car. "What's your name bud?"
"Liam! I wanna be like you when I grow up!"
"Well, Liam," Ricky signed the car, bent down and handed him the car. "If you work hard enough, win as many races as you can, then I know you're going to achieve your dreams. And maybe one day, you'll get to race against me!"
"You really mean that?"
"I do, Liam." Ricky gave the kid a fist bump, messed with his hair before placing his own hat on top of Liam's head.I stood in the shadows watching Ricky interact with this little boy, with each passing minute my heart soared. He didn't have to spend time with Liam, he could have signed his car, took a photo and walked away, but instead, he answered every question he threw at him and even posed for a few more photos and gave him more autographs.
I knew he made that little boy's day. Ricky could wreck out of the 500 but to that little boy, he won the race and so much more.
A leap in the pit of my stomach reminded me of the news I just found out and now was the perfect time to tell Ricky.
"Just be a few more minutes, babe, if that's okay?" He came up to me and gave me a kiss on the cheek.
"Wait." I grabbed his hand and pulled him back to me. "You were so sweet to that little boy."
"Nah, it was nothing, just wanted him to have a good time."
"No, I really mean it. You're so sweet and amazing to kids. I can't wait to see how you'll do with your own."I took Ricky's hand and placed it on my stomach, implying to him that his time was coming soon.
"You're not?" Ricky looked at me in shock. I shook my head yes, smiling brightly at him. "I'm going to be a dad?" His voice cut off at the end as his eyes began to tear up.
"I just found out from the doctor the other day." I took Ricky's face in my hands. "I can't wait to see what an amazing father you're going to be. I love you, so much." I pressed my lips to his as Ricky wrapped his arms around me tightly. He pulled away, tears running down both of our faces. "You amaze me, babe, I can't believe this. Winning the pole is dim in comparison to finding out that we're going to be parents. I can't wait to experience this with you. I love you." Ricky kissed me, bending me backwards so far until I started laughing. "I'm going to be a father!" Ricky yelled picking me up and swirling us in a circle.
My laugh got lost in my throat as Ricky kissed me again and yeah, this man was going to be an amazing father and I couldn't wait.
