"Okay, Kimmie, you got this. Just take a deep breath and get out of the car." I looked in the mirror one last time, making sure my makeup was perfect and there were no hair out of place. I opened my door and got out before I regretted what I was about to do.
I quickly threw my small backpack on and looked across the parking lot towards Chastain's Watermelon farm.
"I'm being so silly." I muttered to myself, picking invisible lint off my cute summer dress and pushed myself forward. "Just go in, pickup your crate of watermelons and say hello and ask him out for drinks. That's it. If he says no, then we're going to never eat watermelons again. Okay? Okay." I knew I looked crazy walking towards the entrance and talking to myself but if I didn't give myself a pep talk then I was going to talk myself out of doing this.
I remember the first time I found this little watermelon farm. I just moved to the area and was just driving along the back roads until I saw a huge party with tons of people. There were food trucks, craft vendors along with some small carnival rides for children. I found out it was their yearly festival to kick off the watermelon season.
Then I saw him; a tall, lean man with tan skin stacking a pile of watermelons for people to buy. I caught myself staring, unable to look away as his muscles bulged and sweat dripped down his face. Then he looked up at me and smiled. "Ma'am", he said with a soft twang to his voice. My breath hitched as he held out his hand. "I'm Ross, welcome to my farm. I haven't seen you before, new around here?"
I mumbled embarrassingly how I just moved here and just happened to drive by and decided to stop. His smile grew brightly, welcoming me to the area and telling me everything about his farm.
Ross showed me around, how the seeds are planted and once they come to full term, he shows me how they're harvested. I was amazed at all the hard work and the equipment that he had to use.
I was also surprised to find out that in his spare time, he's a local racecar driver hoping to make it to the big time. I wanted to go to a race to see what it was all about, but every time I plucked up the courage, I talked myself out of it.
"Kimmie! I'm so glad you made it sweetheart, I was just telling my dear Ross how it's been a while since you've shown up." Blush colored my cheeks as Ross' grandmother rushed over to me and gave me a tight hug.
"Memaw, stop smothering her." Ross rounded the corner and my breath hitched. He was carrying a huge watermelon and my eyes landed on those big biceps of his. I had to take a slow and steady breath just to calm myself down.
"Nonsense, Ross, I love your Grandma." I hugged her tightly as she gave Ross a smug look."At least someone loves me."
"Kimmie, give me a minute and I'll grab your order." Ross shook his head and laughed.
I nodded, following him inside of the storefront they have. I decided to pick up some other stuff as well that his family sold and went to the counter and waited for Ross.
"Here." He came out of the backroom with a crate of small watermelons that I loved, along with some homemade bread his Grandmother makes and a bouquet of flowers?
"I didn't order those." I looked at Ross in confusion and he just smiled.
"I know," he pulled them out of the crate and walked up to me. "I was out in the field picking when I saw these wild sunflowers. They reminded me of your hazel eyes and how you always remind me of sunshine." My heart started to melt as Ross met my eyes. "So I picked them for you."
"Ross..." I was getting emotional because no guy has ever picked out flowers for me.
"Kimmie, I think you're adorable, sweet and someone I want to spend my days with. I know this is crazy and all too much, but..."
I didn't let Ross finish, grabbing the back of his neck, pulling him down for a sweet, long kiss.
"I wanted to do that the very first time I saw you," I confessed, hiding my face in his neck. He gently tilted my chin up and my heart flipped when I saw nothing but love and adoration looking back at me.
"Does this mean you're finally mine?"
"You don't even have to ask." Ross smiled, reaching down and wrapping his arms around my waist and lifted me up onto the counter.
A loud crash caused us to jump and I laughed when my watermelons smashed to the ground.
"Oh well, looks like the hot watermelon farmer needs to get me some more watermelons."
"So I'm hot now?" Ross teased, brushing his nose against mine.
"You have no idea." I smiled, pulling him into me so I could kiss him again and again and again.
My heart has never been more happy at this moment, my farmer was finally mine.
