~A week later~

The second he undoes the blindfold and reveals he's taken you to a frozen yogurt place, presenting it as if it were some royal palace, you know you love him.

It's the simplest, most mundane moment to realize it, but that makes it no less surprising.

He drags you in and claps his hands excitedly as he surveys the flavors. You can't help but laugh. Once you get to the front of the line, you're confused when the cashier doesn't start wildly flirting with you. When you're not concentrating on controlling your powers, you usually attract the attention of any guy you're near. But, to your surprise and somewhat delight, no one inside or outside the store pays you any attention. There's no lovestruck looks or wild declarations of affection other than the ones you've been getting from Peter for the past two weeks or so.

As you watch the people walk by from under the umbrella of your table outside, absentmindedly twirling your spoon in your melted frozen yogurt, Peter looks up from his finished treat, concerned.

"Y/N?" he asks. "Is something bothering you?"

You shake your head, but there are tears forming in your eyes.

"What's wrong?"

"Everything," you say.

Peter's face falls.

"Is there anything I can do?"

"No!" you snap. "You've done enough!"

He puts a supportive hand on your shoulder from across the table, but seems to decide that isn't enough, because after a moment he gets up and pulls up a chair beside you. He envelops you in a warm, calming hug, and you pretend, as you have been all this week, that his love is yours.

"It's just been... so nice..." you confess. "Pretending. Pretending someone like you could love someone like me. That anyone could love me without these stupid powers."

"I love you without your powers."

"No you don't," you tell him. You can't stand to look at his face, full of love and affection you don't deserve. That are fake. And that will always be fake, no matter how badly you want them to be real.

"Yes I do," he insists like a stubborn child. "I. Love. You. I love everything about you. Your name, the way you laugh, how you hate to clean up after making breakfast, how you get scared when I sneak up on you, how your lips taste, your e/c eyes..."

"My eyes aren't e/c," you interrupt. "They're pink. Like a rose."

"They don't look rose-colored to me," Peter says simply, and he wipes a tear from your cheek.

"Peter..." you sigh his name, but his finger abruptly leaves your face and you look down to see the boy you've fallen head over heels for motionless on the ground.

"Peter!" you cry. "Peter, can you...?"

You feel a prick on the back of your neck and everything goes black.
