"Are you sure he'll actually want to see me?" you ask Stark for what must be the billionth time.
"Yes," he replies, continuing to lead you down the hall.
"Okay, but are you really sure? Like, a hundred percent sure?"
The billionaire sighs and turns to block your way.
"Jesus Christ, you and Parker really are perfect for each other," he mutters, making you blush. "For the last time, yes. I am positively, one hundred percent sure he'll want to see you."
The two of you keep walking, you trying to remain as stoic as possible.
You're failing miserably.
Tony almost chuckles in spite of himself. You bear no resemblance to the detached, snarky shell of a person he knew. You remind him of Peter so much right now, almost vibrating with anxiety and anticipation, just like he always does whenever Tony shows him some new gadget or introduces him to another hero. Maybe Peter was right about you. Underneath all of that bluster and bravado, you're just a kid.
Realizing his gaze is on you, you narrow your eyes, making it clear you're still skeptical. Despite Stark's confidence, you know you can't let down your guard just yet. If Peter doesn't want to see you, if this is all some kind of twisted trap, you have to be ready.
"Here, I'll prove it to you," he continues, holding up his wrist and tapping his watch. "Now, I know recording someone without their permission is technically wrong—"
"Technically?"
"—but I think you need to hear it straight from the horse's mouth, if you know what I mean."
"Mr. Stark, I need to fix this," Peter's voice says through the watch. It's scratchy, like he hasn't used it in days. Hearing his voice, so absent of its usual warmth and hope, makes your heart physically ache.
"I have to see her again! Just one more time, that's it! I need to tell her that it wasn't the curse! She needs to know that there's someone out there that loves her! Don't you understand?"
Stark stops again, another exasperated sigh escaping his lips as he rubs his tired eyes. You used to find it funny how the things Tony Stark lacked were the things he couldn't buy--peace of mind, self-acceptance, sleep--but now you realize just how much he has on his shoulders.
"He begged me, Y/N. Begged me to see you one last time, just so he could tell you that."
"I know Peter, Y/N. And as much as I hate to admit it, he loves you."
You hear the underlying confession in his words: I was wrong.
"Looks like we've both changed, Stark."
He stops in front of a door, pondering something. After a moment, he seems to come to a decision.
He pats you on the shoulder as he reaches to open the door.
"Call me Tony."
"Yeah, we're not there yet."
