3 | WHAT IF I STAYED HERE

I awoke to the sound of birds chirping outside and I smiled.

I got up and checked the time.

6am. It read.

I got ready and I waited outside at the bus stop patiently.

When the bus arrived, I got on and I glanced towards the back of the bus.

Manik wasn't in his usual seat and I sat down in my usual seat in the back.

After the first class of the day I walked down the crowded halls to my locker.

I opened my locker and I Fiddled with my work and my books.

I felt a light tap on my shoulder and I turned.

My eyes met with a smiling Maddy and I smiled back.

"Hi.."

He says and scratches the back of his neck.

"Hey... how are you?"

I ask awkwardly.

"I'm good... just wanted to say hi"

He says and meets my eyes.

"Well hi"

I say sarcastically with a smile.

He chuckles lightly.

"Do you maybe want to get something to eat later?"

He asks and I internally panic.

As I opened my mouth to speak, I'm interrupted.

"Actually... I believe we have plans later, don't we Nandini?"

Manik's voice speaks authoritatively and I almost jumped as I realize he's standing right next to me.

I think fast and I don't waste any time.

"Actually, I think I might have to take a rain check... I have to get home early tonight"

I lie to both of them.

"I understand... maybe another time, I gotta get to class.. bye!"

Maddy says happily and begins to walk away.

"Bye"

I say quietly.

As Maddy walks away I glance at Manik.

His expression is cold as he glances at Maddy.

His gaze softens when he turns to me.

"Hello"

He says with a slight smile.

"What was that about?"

I ask trying to sound happy.

He says nothing but instead he grabs me by the arm rather roughly and he pulls me into a janitor's closet.
