Benson went directly home and started to pack everything he knew he would need. He finished in mere moments and closed the duffel bag, now full of clothes, and was on his way out of the house but stopped abruptly.
He stared at a picture of a woman in a frame that was old and well used. Splinters sticking out of it and a crack went right across the image. He reached his hand out to touch the woman's face. Hesitating he paused, then clenched his hand. A feeling of regret washed over him and he quickly pulled the frame down to cover the picture.
"I'm sorry. I broke so many promises" he laughed pitifully as he marched to the door "and I'm about to break yet another one."
He entered his car and placed the bag on the passenger seat while staring up the vehicle. "Never thought I would be planning a visit to that place."
He gripped the leather wheel as a he felt a surge of regret. "This is stupid!" He banged his hand on the wheel. "Why should I help them!?"
"Everyone needs help, because no one can do everything." Suddenly he heard her voices with a vague vision of her face smiling at him seemed inches away from him. "It's just a another thing that makes us human!"
"Okay." He whispered sliding his hands up and down the cold leather. "I get it. I'm going." He put his car in drive and started his long journey. His long journey home.
