My head was THROBBING.
I tried to open my eyes but it made my head hurt worse so for that moment I just closed my eyes and took in what I could from my other senses. I was laying on the ground. It was wet. The air was warm, too warm, and it almost felt wet as well. Sticky. The air smelt metallic and it made my stomach turn. I tried to swallow but it was too late, without opening my eyes I sat up and threw up next to me. As I was wiping my mouth I slowly started to open my eyes. I was sitting on an old gym floor that was covered in something red.
It's koolaid. I told myself. But it was too thick.
Maybe a melted cherry popsicle. But when I lifted my hands the metallic smell hit me stronger there was no denying what it was. So I did what any logical person in my situation would do.
I began screaming at the top of my lungs.
Suddenly a hand clamped over my mouth, at the same time something began banging on the doors to the gym, as if trying to get in. I closed my eyes again, preparing for the worst when suddenly I heard Daniels voice whisper in my ear.
"I'm going to remove my hand. Don't make a sound."
I nodded dutifully, but did not open my eyes.
He removed his hand, as promised, and I complied with his demands and stayed quiet. I felt him move to where he was in front of me.
"Open your eyes Azra"
I shook my head.
"I don't think I will,"
His voice got sharper but stayed in a whisper.
"Azra open your damn eyes."
I gritted my teeth but did. The first thing I noticed was the giant gooseegg on his head. My mouth fell open in shock but he shook his head and pointed behind me. My stomach fell, but I took a deep breath, stood up, and turned around.
To my surprise what was behind me was two normal people, a woman and a man.
On the upside, they were not scary.
On the downside, they were not Noah.
I locked eyes with the woman. Suddenly I was crying. She looked alarmed, but Daniel shook his head and whispered to her.
"Don't mind her she's pregnant."
Hearing this sombered me up and I narrowed my eyes at him. How dare he? We didn't know these people. They could've been baby killers for all we know. Doesn't matter that they looked completely innocent and terribly frightened. I gave him a scathing look, but he wasn't looking at me anymore. I followed his gaze and turned to look as he began speaking.
"What the-"
And I couldn't stop myself from speaking as well.
"Why are there so many doors?"
There, in front of us, were four sets of double doors, spread a few feet apart from each other all on one wall.
Suddenly the banging on the door grew louder and I remembered what we saw at the supermarket and the last thing that happened before we woke up here. Taking a deep breath, I turned to look at Daniel.
"What do you think the odds are that whatever's banging on the door was also at the store?"
His eyes widened in realization while the man behind him looked very confused.
"We need to find a way out. Now."
He began walking towards the doors on the far right.
"Daniel, what the hell are you doing?"
He turned and looked at me with a determined look on his face.
"We have to start somewhere."
The banging got worse and suddenly we were all behind him, bracing ourselves for whatever was on the other side of the door when suddenly, without warning he opened it: and it was not AT ALL what I was expecting.
