Chapter Five: Caught Red-Handed

Elizabeth's eyes widened as her brother stared at the two of them. His eyes were full of rage.

"Get off my sister, Pope." Tom's voice was laced with anger.

The man immediately did as he was told, moving to obediently sit next to her as Elizabeth slowly sat up.

"What's going on here?" Tom asked, looking at Elizabeth.

"Tom, Santiago and I are dating."

"For how long?"

"A year."

The man's face paled. "You've been dating Pope for a year, and you didn't tell me? Why?"

"Look at how you're acting!" She stood up, walking towards her brother. "I mean, Jesus, you act like I'm dating Lorea. This is Santiago we're talking about."

"I don't want anyone dating you." Tom replied, glaring at her.

"I am a grown ass woman. I was just kidnapped by a cartel leader, and what you're most angry about is my boyfriend?"

Tom's eyes widened slightly, and he took a step back. Elizabeth had a point. He sighed softly.

"I'm just trying to keep you-"

"Safe? You can keep me safe by killing that man."

Santiago stood up, walking towards Elizabeth and Tom. "She's right, Redfly."

Tom sent a glare at Santiago. "I swear to God, if you hurt her, I'll kill you."

"I wouldn't dream of it." Santiago remarked.

Tom pursed his lips, giving them both a curt nod before he ducked out of the tent. Elizabeth carefully sat back down with Santiago.

"Well... that went about as well as we could've hoped." Santiago whispered.

"Well, you're still alive."

The couple burst into giggles as Elizabeth leaned her head against his shoulder. He wrapped an arm around her.

"We're gonna kill him. Don't worry."

"I want a piece of him."

"Amor."

"I'm coming with you." She paused. "I'm just as capable with a gun as you are."

"I know you are." He placed his hands on her hips. "I know that more than anyone else here."

"Then you know Ripper and I are cut out for the job." Elizabeth turned to look at Santiago. "This heist you've been wanting to pull is dangerous. We're all in danger of being killed, and I can't risk sitting back and watching you potentially die."

Santiago looked down, pursing his lips. "Fine. I know you can handle it."

She kissed his cheek, and he smiled faintly. The two enjoyed the silence for a few moments before Elizabeth felt herself drifting off to sleep.

"Go to sleep, cariño." Santiago whispered.

Elizabeth hesitated.

"I'll be right with you, okay? Ripper and I will protect you."

The woman nodded, moving to lie back down with Santiago lying down on top of her. She didn't mind his gear and vest pressing into her skin. She was safe, and that's all that mattered. The couple fell asleep in each other's arms, listening to the quiet sounds of the jungle around them.
