Cyclical Requiem

Inspired by “The Flower Duet” from “Lakme”

Composed by Leo Delibes

Leaves taking flight on ethereal wings

Out of the forest cathedral serene

As tints of crimson and tangerine swell

Against the healthy portrait of green

Transcending colours with elegant art

Harmonious writhes of gorgeous decay

Innocence ravished by beautiful age

Engulfing the dark before sweet golden day

So begins our cyclical requiem

Born into the sun to die in the snow

And return again along with the warmth

Like the forgiveness of an old rival

So focused we are on simple colour

And age, but yet the focal point of life

Goes from green to red and young to wrinkly

Season by season, all surrendering

To time, death, and the beautifully finite

So cast your diamonds into the ocean

And your precious metals into the ground

And find beauty in those just as fragile

And desperate for meaning and affection

As you claim to be, change is not a knife

At your throat, threatening and provoking

You with new ideas and fresh perspective

Change is as natural as breathing

The promise of spring the great incentive
