I can do this, I thought. I can do this.
For the past ten minutes I had been pacing around the bathroom, trying to get ready for the big day. Tara was still downstairs sleeping, so I still had a couple more minutes to prepare myself. “Whaaaaaaah!” I whispered, throwing my head into my hands. “This is waaay too hard for just one girl!” Calm down, I will be able to do this. I can do it…
Emily thought that since it was a more special day that I should wear a special dress. Out of her own closet, she gave me a beautiful long-sleeved sweater dress and a pair of leggings. She also insisted on doing my hair, which ended up being curled and pulled half back. Then, as I was staring myself in the large mirror over the vanity, I took in a deep breath and made my way out of the bathroom into the kitchen. Sam was sitting at the counter, eating a plate of eggs and some toast.
“Morning Mirabelle. Did you sleep well?”
“I guess so.”
He smiled, “You ready for the party?”
I shrugged, “I guess so. I mean, I’m happy for Tara, but…” My eyes started tearing up again, but I pushed them back, trying to keep a solid smile on my face. Sam got up and embraced me in a bear hug.
“Don’t worry sweat pea, you’ll do great.” I smiled in his shoulder. He let me go and nodded towards the basement door. “You should probably go get her up. You guys need to get ready for the parties.”
I smiled, making my way back downstairs. Emily had walked into the kitchen and continued cooking breakfast for me and Tara. As I stepped of the last step, I glanced at the lump of blankets next to my bed. I sighed and knelt down, shaking the figure.
“Tara! Get up!”
The lump groaned, rolling over to her other side.
“Why? It’s waaay too early in the morning to be functioning.”
I shook my head. “You dork! Come on! It’s already nine o’clock! Anyways, today’s a special day!”
She peaked out of her cocoon. “What are you talking about?”
“Today’s your birthday silly head! Remember?”
“Oh, yeah, that’s right,” She sat all the way up, looking around the room. Her hair was a complete rat’s nest. I shook my head, turning to walk towards the stairs.
“Hurry and get dressed. And wear something nice. We’re going to make your cake soon.”
She looked up at me, confused. “Shouldn’t we wait and do that later? Like, before supper?”
“Yeah, well, the vampires want to then, and the werewolves and vamps don’t want to share your 18th birthday party, so… We’re throwing two parties instead!”
There was a look of pure terror on her face. “TWO parties?! But, really, you don’t have to..”
“Yeah, not hurry and get dressed!” with an evil smiled, I continued up the steps and into the kitchen, my heart squeezing tight. How long will this go on?
Moving on to the living room, I slipped on a pair of boots. I took a seat on the couch and waited for Tara to finish getting ready to I could shoo her out of the house.
Finally, after fifteen minutes, Tara emerged wearing a white shirt and brown capris. I rolled my eyes, but I let it go. “Okay, go outside and I’ll see you in a while.” She made her way out the back door and disappeared to the other side of the house. I sighed, turning to face the empty living room. Great, time to get to work.
