Chapter 2 - Man of the Hour

1886, New Orleans, Louisiana - Day 2

Lancaster POV:

After two and a half days of travelling, I have made it to the city that Care forgot. Now, we find our man, the head of the mafia in Louisiana, Angelo Bronte. I really should rest for a while, but this is an investigation, not an assassination. Once I found out that I was going after this man, I did want to just kill him and be done with it, because I've had encounters with his men before. Unlike me, they will kill uninvolved people to get what they need. They are not good people. Despite knowing this, I have never witnessed Bronte himself ever committing crimes, just the Soldati, or soldiers in Italian mafia ranks. So because of my rule, I cannot go after him just yet. That's why I hope to find something in the mansion he lives in, so I can lynch him, and his power streak will come to an end. I've secured Bullet close by, in case things do go South, and I need a quick escape.

I'm watching the mansion from the roof of an adjacent building. There's guards walking around in the front, dressed formally. Maybe that's just the Mafia's way of doing that. No, wait.

Is that a party in the back?

It is. I see groups of people dressed very nice and waiters walking around with trays. That must be the front. If i can get in there, I'll have a good idea of what's going on here. In and out. Simple.

I had my revolver and my new pistol with me, along with a bow and arrow, because I needed something silent in case I had to engage in combat. The guns are a last resort. At this point I'm jumping over the gate, and running to the nearest bushes. A guard passes me, and once I'm sure he can't hear me, I rush to the next closest bush.

This is taking too long. I have to get in there now.

I looked around quickly, and surprisingly enough, no guard was in immediate sight.

I'd better hurry then. What's the fastest way in? Ah, right there.

I looked up. There's a balcony overlooking the road with big pillars holding it up. That'll work. Looking around once more and seeing no one, I promptly got up out of the bushes, and scaled the pillar up onto the balcony. Once up there, I scanned the immediate area in front of me. All clear so far. I walked in, and it's a fancy bedroom, a big bed with a nice wardrobe accompanying it.

Must be the Master Bedroom.

I look to the left. It's a hallway. I peek my head out to see if anyone is coming, and thankfully everyone is towards the party side of the house. I carefully walk down the hallway, noting that the architecture is extremely detailed.

The guy's got cash. I guess that makes sense, since he's a crime lord.

I'm walking down another hallway when I hear voices in a room. I stop and go up against the wall next to the door, a big plant covering me. I hear the distinct voice of someone I didn't expect to hear.

What's Big Jim doing in a place like this? He's strictly a Texan Capo. Could this be a combination?

Big Jim: "You sure we can't just case the joint? It ain't a big heist, we only need a little more dough for the project to be finished."

Project? That don't sound good.

Voice #1: "Boss said we won't, so we ain't gonna."

Voice #2: "Say, where is the man of the hour anyway?"

Voice #3: "Yeah, it's been some time now."

Big Jim: "Relax, Iceman. He's on the balcony talking to some associates right now. He'll be back soon."

As if magically, I hear the clicking of shoes coming down the hallway. I'm still behind the bush, so whoever it is can't see me.

Voice #4: "Apologies for the wait, I was finishing up business with my other partners."

Voice #5: "What's a matter with us? We ain't good enough?"

Voice #4: "Oh, most certainly not! They are just taking care of another aspect of this grand operation of ours."

Iceman: "Whatever you say, Bronte."

Bronte? Yeah, that's him alright. I could just kill him right now and be done. No, I have to follow him, I can't kill him just yet.

Angelo: "Now, I must attend to some other business for a moment. If you will, please enjoy yourselves at this extravagant party I have put together."

Big Jim: "You always did know how to throw a party, Angelo."

Angelo: " I still do. Now please, make yourselves at home."

I hear people getting up, then multiple footsteps going out the doors. I'm not sure if Bronte has left yet, but if he has, he can't have gotten far. After the Capos' footsteps fade, I peer over the plant. I see Bronte at the end of the hall with two bodyguards walking behind him.

I need to follow him before I lose the trail.

I see him and the guards turn right at the hall, so I dash towards the end as quiet as I can. I need to take out the guards somehow, but my bow isn't very effective here, since it's a bow versus gun fight, and I don't want to kill anyone. But if I use a gun, I'll surely be outnumbered. I'll just have to divide them somehow.

On top of a nearby table, I see a porcelain lamp and get an idea. I grab the lamp and push it so it shatters right after I get out of sight. I hear the footsteps stop, then start again.

I'll have to be quick.

One guard comes around the corner, I pull him towards me and headbutt him hard enough to the point where his vision is more or less disabled. I take the chance I have to pick him up and give him an uppercut, knocking him out. I then throw him into a closet close by. That's one taken care of.

Looking back down the hall, I didn't see the second one. He must've gone ahead with Bronte. Right as I step forward, a hand grabs my shoulder and pulls me back.

Well, now I know where the other guard went.

As I get turned around, a fist collides with the side of my face, and I get knocked to the floor. This guy's quiet, and he packs a strong one. I'll have to take care of him quickly then.

I get up, and as fast as lightning, I evade the next jab he attempts to make and duck under him to push him back. He stumbles, and I take that time to run up to him, then drop down, to execute a stunning sweep kick. I expect him to fall, but he defies my assumption, rolling back over and getting up.

Not exactly what I wanted, but I'll roll with it.

This time he tries to give me a right hook, but I step back, narrowly missing the attack. Blocking one more punch, I give the guard one good elbow strike, and swiftly following a fierce axe stomp to the leg. As he kneels, I give him one roundhouse kick to the chest, promptly ending the fight.

Good match, Partner. Maybe we'll cross paths again sometime.

After placing him in the same closet the first guard was in, I felt something in his pocket.

He had kunai in his pockets, and didn't even use them? I'm insulted. Actually, where would he even get these?
Considering he won't be using them any time soon, I snatch the throwing knives from his pocket and store them away in my shotgun coat pocket, and carried on to find the Italian scum. I think he took a right.
