Chapter 5 - Reunion & Recollection

Date Unknown, Country Unown, World Unknown - Day 5

Lancaster POV:

I don’t think I’ve ever been more relieved than I am now to see my horse, standing in the moonlight, looking at me like I’ve seen a spirit. Quite frankly, I believe I have. Bullet, along with all my belongings strapped up on him, should not be wherever this place is. To be fair though, neither should I. But, beggars can't be choosers, so I ain’t complaining. I quickly reload my revolver and pistol, and swap my bow and quiver for my rifle and shotgun. I take my hatchet and kunai with me as well, because at this point, I ain’t taking any chances in this forest filled with beings out for my blood. I swear, it’s like they’re all around me. As I saddle up, I hear the lovely growl of what I so dearly hope to be a dog.

It’s not a dog.

Apparently these chupacabra-like wolves have great tracking abilities, because I was damn sure I covered up my tracks well enough. Whatever, I have weapons now, so I should be safer now.

Let’s hope my aim is better now, too.

Taking aim to the closest one, I fired a shot that found its way into the wolf’s left eye, making it howl in pain. At this point I’m ready to leave, and so is Bullet, so we both decide we’ve hung around long enough, and cut the visit short by flying out of the clearing back into that forsaken forest. It looks like tracking isn’t all the beasts are good at, they run fast too. Taking my shotgun out, I face the oncoming predators,  load a shell in and line up my shot. Once targeted, I fire and knock out three of the five, which is fairly impressive for a shotgun. I don’t have many rounds for the Browning, so I switch to my Colt to save ammo. I turn around once more and aim for the legs. I end up hitting one of the three, tripping him up and falling into another, successfully disabling the two. Now it’s just myself and the big one. He looks like the Alpha. I have a feeling a semi-automatic won’t do for this fellow. Not even looking back, I pull the trigger, and aim to where I think the creature might be, using the automatic function of the firearm. This tactic used back home is called blindfiring, and sometimes it proves to be very helpful, like here. Proving to me I don’t need to be an expert sharpshooter - Which I am - to be able to hit something. I can hear the monster fall behind me, ending the chase. I look back to make sure I’ve executed the wolf, but what I turn around to leaves me all but stunned.

I see the body of the wolf on the ground, flaking up into ash, dissipating into the air. No blood, no cry of pain, almost as if the creature had never existed. I stay and watch for a moment, unable to fully understand what just happened.

I must be dreaming. There ain’t a single soul on this planet that can tell me otherwise.

I look around to get my bearings. It turns out I’m out of the forest, and looking at the cliffside now. Now, to find a way up.
