Mending

To progress toward recovery, as a sick person.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

I felt quite warm and cozy. My muscles were stiff. I tried moving my head around but it hurt too much to fully move it sideways. I slowly opened my eyes and looked around. It was still morning. There was dew on the grass and the birds were still rather quiet. The leaves of the trees rustled quietly in the calm breeze of the wind. It was cloudy but the sun penetrated the cloud cover here and there sending yellow beams of sunshine upon the green of the forest. It was a beautiful morning.

Normally I'd get up and go downstairs. I'd have breakfast. I'd go to school or hang out with friends. I can't go downstairs. I'm already down. I can't get up from here. I don't want to. I don't know where I am. I know this boy brought me here. I don't know where he is though.

As if on cue I saw him approaching between the trees. I sat up and stretched myself. I looked at him with dull eyes. He looked kind of worried. He had a backpack with him. A small one. He slowly walked closer.

"Can I s-sit?" he asked.

He stutters. He's twitchy as well. Is he nervous? He doesn't sound nervous. I'm not exactly a threat to him in my current state so why would he be?

I shrugged and pointed next to me. He sat down and opened his backpack. He took out some cloth, alcohol and bandages before looking back at me.

"Ho-hold out your arms f-for me please"

I held them up for him. He put some alcohol on the cloth and wiped it over my arms. I clenched my teeth together. The cuts were stinging badly due to the disinfectant. I kept quiet though. Voicing my pain wouldn't make it go away.

If the boy noticed my discomfort he didn't show it. After he completely cleaned the cuts on my arms he wrapped them in bandages.

"Leave it o-on so it can heal" he stuttered. "What's yo-your name?"

"Carter" I replied. "And yours?"

"Toby"

We sat there quietly for a few minutes before I let out a loud sigh. Toby looked at me. I started to tear up. I couldn't just accept it. It feels so sick to leave your parents behind so suddenly. I hadn't even said goodbye to them. I knew I'd never see them again. Give it two more days and people will have found the car wreck. It'll be removed and I won't be there when that happens. I feel so lost. I don't know where I am. I don't know who I am anymore either. Everyone I was, was left in the car. Destroyed when it crashed.

Toby reached into his backpack. He fished out two juice boxes with apple juice and two plastic wrapped sugar waffles. He held a box and a waffle in front of me.

"I don't know when y-you last ate so I took s-some food with me"

I shook my head slightly. Toby didn't seem to mind and eagerly tore off the wrapping of his waffle.

I leaned back onto the log I was sitting on and checked myself. I came off relatively unharmed. My legs were mostly bruised. My arms aren't hurting as much anymore. My neck was stiff. My chest was unharmed except for the red stripe from the seat belt. My clothes didn't come out as unscathed. Mostly rips in my jeans.
