I laid on the ground for what felt like an eternity. I felt the blood dripping down my arms to the ground. I was completely frozen. No matter how much I wanted to get this guy off of me I couldn't move.
Toby grabbed the hiker and pulled him off. With that my dagger got freed, leaving the red blade uncovered. I kept laying there, staring at the sky.
"Are you okay? Are you hurt?" Toby kneeled next to me.
I shook my head.
"Is that an I'm not okay or an I'm not hurt?"
I felt the adrenaline slowly wearing off and then it dawned on me. Everything that just happened punched me in the gut. I took a look at myself. My clothes were stained with blood, just like my arms. Apart from that I looked completely fine and unscathed.
"I... I think I'm okay." I slowly replied.
He grabbed me by my arm and pulled me up. He gave me a quick pat on the shoulder.
"Well done." He smiled at me.
I nodded slightly.
"A-are you okay though?" I said checking him up and down swiftly.
He too was bloody. He had scratches and cuts over his face. Most were light injuries out of which some were still bleeding lightly. There was one rather worrying wound underneath his chin. It was a cut following a few centimetres along his jaw line. It was bleeding more than the rest which is what concerned me the most.
"You're all busted and bloody." I pointed out with a meek voice.
"I'll be fine," He shrugged. "Come on. We'll walk back to the mansion, freshen ourselves up and then I'll deal with this guy."
I nodded. "What... what about our bags?"
"I'll take them with me later. Let's just go for now."
With that he started walking, gently pulling me along by my arm. It was good that he did so. Regardless of my worries about his well being I was still in shock.
I took a look over my shoulder. The hiker looked pale, the last of his blood flowing from his chest. It's surprising how little it takes for someone to die. He was there when he ran to me. When he got to me he was gone.
Just like that, I had taken a life. I killed someone. I didn't mean to kill him. I just wanted to keep him from harming Toby. I've now truly gone over the edge. I have blood on my hands. No matter what I do, I can no longer return to society. This will be my life, stuck with killers, destined to kill. A daunting prospect. A future I have yet to embrace.
I better embrace it soon before the future catches up with me.
We only had to walk 200 meters through the dense forest before we got to the clearing where the mansion was situated.
"Has your chin stopped bleeding yet?" I asked.
"Not really," He replied. "The medical supplies are in the kitchen."
We walked inside and he immediately went for the first aid kit while I quietly followed him around.
He looked at me. "I don't really k-know first aid or anything of the sort."
I looked at him rather surprised. "You don't know how to use a first aid kit?"
He shook his head. "And judging by your reaction you don't really know e-either."
